Good morning everyone. After months of waiting, I finally received a surgery date 4/16/2020. I would love to chat with anyone having surgery in April.

my status:
Insurance: changed from a PPO to an *** (due to a new job). I have emblemhealth HIP Prime ***.

Began process July 2019: 6 months of checking my weight.
BMI 39: mild sleep apnea and hypertension.

hospital : Lenox Hill in NY

Surgery : RNY but still seriously considering DS. My doc is open to any of them but encouraged me to choose RNY.

I have a pre-op class next month 2/20 and must complete pre-op labs during the last week of March 2020. Paperwork to my insurance will be submitted in March 2020.

good luck everyone!! I am hoping I get my surgery approved by my insurance as I am looking forward to my new journey

Hi!!

Congrats! I’m really hoping I get a date around that timeframe! I just started the process December 31st, but my insurance has no waiting period. I’ll finish with all necessary appointments March 9th & will be submitted that day. I’m so nervous! I literally sit and wonder “can this really happen for me?”. I’m excited for you! I think it’s cool how they already gave you a date prior to the insurance approval! What hospital & where are you from? I’m in Wisconsin & am going to Froedtert ❤️

Ahhh congratulations to you and beginning the process!!

I am from NY. I am having my surgery at Lenox hill in Manhattan. I love the staff and program. I don’t have to do a weight in for my insurance. The practice requires it. Which surgery are you considering ?

Hello,

I am so glad to hear April is you month. May date is the 7th of April 4 days after my 56th birthday. Happy Birthday to me...This is my gift to myself. I can not wait. I am in Michigan started the journey in May of 2019. Due to my insurance I had to go 6 months in a row with missing any appointments. on my last appointment I gained some weight so they gave me another month, to make sure I was living the bariatric life style...so I did good in November lost 11 lbs. my next goal was to stop smoking which I did (happy dance) and now I have to be 3 months smoke free, hence my date in April. I am very excited to do this I am dragging along so uncomfortably right now... let's do this!!!!!

Congrats!!! This is random, but do you (or anyone else who sees this) obsess over the surgery? Wondering if it will be approved, worried that something will change, etc.? If so, how do you manage it?! I literally have a hard time sleeping now bc it's always on my mind! ALWAYS!

I have been thinking about this since day 1. I have always thought about this I just didn't know that surgery was the way to go (if that makes sense lol) I knew I had to do something. I am tired of feeling like this and I am so ready to make this time count. When I first stopped smoking 1 month ago I was really stressing out about EVERYTHING and it was on my mind big time. I just know that before I know it, it will be April 7th very soon and I am not looking back. I know this is the right thing for me.

I 100% agree! My first time looking into it was 2018, but wasn't at my job long enough to get PTO for after surgery. I'm 100% sure I want this! I understand what you mean about not being sure if it was the way to go, when I tell people they are like "Danielle you don't need it". I've just never been able to maintain my health & that's all I want! My sister was sleeved 07/2018 & she looks amazing which is great but she FEELS even better! I can't wait!

That is great you have a family member that has had it done....my bf is like "it's a life threatening surgery" and I'm like ALL the health issues that I have are far more life threatening then the surgery itself...I understand that some people are freaked out by someone doing something like this but hey it my life and I want to have a much much much better 2nd half of it. I am done messing around. I have tried everything under the sun but this so my choice, my body, my mind!!!! So there lol

I SWEAR! lol. I'm super excited to feel as good as I look. That's most important to me. I know I'm not "huge" but I know that this isn't healthy for me & neither are fad diets! And I knowww I'm happy I have my sister to go to with any questions. My mom had rny like 20 years ago, so I get to have her opinion as well. Do you have instagram or anything?

I am counting down yesterday was exactly 3 months, so I m looking at this like I have 7 more pay checks, 12 weeks before I start the liquid diet part I am so excited. My boss had it done and she looks great.

I think I'm most nervous about not getting an approval. I'm being tested for sleep apnea, but really don't think I have it. However, the doc does think it's necessary based off of the fact that nothing really has worked for me longterm. My go-to was always phentermine, but now it doesn't really work for me. And I just deactivated my fb but if I get it back I'll add you! And there is no snow here THANK GAHHHHH...it's cold as all hades though lol

I have sleep apnea, my bf said I stop breathing when I am sleeping. I joke around and say I am the poster child for this surgery. I have high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol depression, anxiety and there is something else lol. One of my turning points was I am getting so sick and tried of taking so many damn pills, oh yeah plus I fell down a flight of stairs like 10 years ago and totally messed up my back. I am so over all of this lol

See I have depression and anxiety, I just wasn't sure if that would be considered? My BP is always around 122/82, which technically is a tad elevated but not enough to be deemed "high".

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
