I found a website that sells "samples" of different Protein drinks. I ordered several and found a few I actually LIKE. The samples were less than $2 each for a full serving size, so I didn't mind trying several.

My favs turned out to be the nectar line... the lemonade one is especially yummy ;)

Also, I was glad I invested in one of the battery operated mixer cups they sell for $12.

I went through months of classes required by our Bariatric Program here before I was banded. It was ingrained into our heads that if you do not get enough Protein the consequences can be devastating.

We do not make Protein nor do we store it. What we get is what we eat every day. So you can see why we need to eat it in our food.

I make it a high priority, I always eat protein first and since I am still in the mushies stage I am pretty much just eating protein for my meals. I know this is so important to my overall health

My program requires no less than 60grms per day. You cannot get that by eating food alone, you must drink it as well. Because we are only allowed 2-3ounce meals you can see you cannot possibly get the protein your body requires by food you eat alone.

I am never to eat more than 4 ounces ever. That is what I knew going in and I am comfortable with. I can barely eat the 2-3oz right now. I have no hunger and am consistently losing. So how can I be upset.

I trust my team of Dr's, Nutritionists and Nurses as well as exercise specialists that follow me for the rest of my life. They have been doing this for quite some time and they know what the studies are showing and they also have there own patients to go by. I beleive this is why they are a Center for Excellence which was a huge factor in my decision to have this surgery.

My post-op diet was actually one month of only soft Proteins. (eggs, chicken, turkey, cottage cheese, lowfat cheese and low sugar yogurt) It was boring but it insured adequate protein intake. After the one month on soft Proteins we were told to keep the ratio 3 to 1. That means three bites protein, one bite veggies or fruit. Also, eating large amounts of protein keeps you satisfied longer.

My nutritionist said 60grams but I voted 80 to 100. I have noticed that if I have at least 80 I am not as hungry.

I was using Isopure, I came to think of it as ISOPUKE when I could not have anything but liquids. I am back to loving the Isopure Zero Carb Ready to Drink, 40grams per 20 oz. If you put one tube of crystal light into the bottle and shake it up, it is MUCH MUCH better. I drink 1/4 of the bottle every two hours or so and I am rarely physically hungry. Mentally hungry is another story but the ISOPURE even helps with this too.

I also LOVE Muscle Milk Light, chocolate Milk or chocolate Mint. 8.5 ounces and 20 grams.

My doctor recommends 60 grams a day, when I told the nurse I was getting between 75 and 80 she said to cut it back. It seems odd to me but I guess I will follow their advice. I'm only 1 week post-op so I'm not really hungry yet. I'm used to 100-125 grams so this is a switch.

My favorite so far is EAS Advant Edge Low Carb. It is 17g of Protein at 110 calories and 3 net carbs. It also comes in several flavors: chocolate, dark chocolate, vanilla, cafe caramel and strawberry. I have found it in several grocery stores. SlimFast Low Carb are OK too, 20g of protein, 190 calories and 2 net carbs. But they are a little higher in calories than my nutritionist recommends.

I read about people drinking Protein shakes for Breakfast and other meals. From what I understand you are suppose to eat solid food as a meal. shakes are liquid and won't stay in the pouch for long. Do the shakes count as part of the Fluid requirements for the day?

I'm still in the supervised diet stage of getting insurance approval. I'm sure everyone does what works for them, but I do find it all confusing. What do the nutritionists suggest?

You're right that we should avoid getting our calories through liquids because, as you said, we might stay hungrier but also, because we could be too tight and not even realize it and that can lead to erosion or slippage.

On the other hand, some people are tighter in the morning and plenty loose in the evenings as the band can change during the day. A shake may be all they can get down in the morning and it's a good idea not to go all day without nutrition. In my case, I'm on the road going from one campus to another a good part of the day and I need to bring portable foods that I can eat in the car, especially since I don't want to risk getting stuck while I'm driving. So I have a shake or two a day and I also like Luna bars, which have 11 grams of soy Protein. I would lose more if I drank nothing but shakes but that's not why I got the band! (Been there, done that! :lol:)

I do count the shakes toward my liquid requirement.

Any suggestions for improving the taste of Slim-Fast low carb diet shake? I am trying one now, Creamy Choc. and it is Not good. I could force it down if I had to but really don't want to :lol:

One suggestion is to get some of the DaVinci sugar-free syrups (there are other brands, too) and add a dash of raspberry or more chocolate or whatever flavor you like. These are the same syrups they use at coffee houses and bars.

Some who are eating shakes for Breakfast and lunch may still be on the liquid stage. I don't move to full liquids and soft Proteins until tomorrow. and no solid Protein until week 4.

I do count my shakes toward my liquid requirement per my doctor's instructions. When I start eating enough Protein from solid food I will dicontinue the shakes, although the office says a lot of people take one a day as insurance. It all depends on how much protein I am able to handle from regular food.< /p>

I am glad to see your post; I like your perspective. I plan to get banded on 3/20/08. Wt. loss goal of 75 lbs. like yours (starting with BMI 36.2). Your wt. loss looks good and very reasonable. How much are you exercising? Is this a tolerable lifestyle? Losing wt. makes almost anything "tolerable," but I'm thinking long-term. Congratulations:)

I have not had sirgery yet, but my doctor said he recommends at least 60 grams per day after, so I am working on getting used to planning for that now. I didn't realize how little Protein I actually eat in a day until I started really tracking it.

Heh, you ain't kiddin'. My Protein goal was/is 105g a day. Easily obtainable, if you like eating a pound and a half of salmon every day or two and a half grilled chicken breasts. Kind of tough to do, post-banding.

      Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
