Freaking out a little bit

I'm 14 days post op. All told I've lost 12 lbs since surgery not bad. Most of that was the first few days however. For more than a week now I've been losing, consistently, every single day, just .2 lbs. Super consistent. I'm eating about 1000 calories a day and hitting my Protein goals at about 60g a day. Drinking more than 64 fl oz of Water daily.

I'm freaked out because everything I read to prepare for surgery indicated there would be dramatic weight loss the first and second months and then it would slow down. But this is pretty dang slow and it's my second week. I don't know what this means but it scares me.

I was a lower BMI patient to begin with (34), self pay and everything. Has anyone had a response similar to mine? Just looking for hope that I'm not a non responder or something :(

Lower BMIs tend to lose a little slower, but you end up at the same place around 18 months. It's a journey relax and enjoy it. Easy to say, hard to do. I only lost on average .2-.3lbs per day. Now I'm 132lbs this morning--down from 287lbs as my most recent high.

I think it's really too early to worry about it or know how you are going to lose in the future. Your body is still healing from the surgery. At 14 days, my main concerns would be getting my Water and Protein in. If you follow your plan, chances are very high that you will meet your goal.

Still way too early, give your body some time. It just had major surgery and needs some time to adjust

You're likely already hitting what people call the 3 week slump. Weeks 3 and 4 were very slow for me but picked up after that. Too early to tell but you'll be fine - stick to the plan

Here comes my post

Take the freakin scale and thru it out - Ok don't throw it out but do not step on the thing every day! If you do get ready for a Special Jacket that buckles in the back and a rubber padded room.

It is a journey and as your body changes you will loose inches and pounds - the idea is to get healthy and happy -

I was a BMI of 35 and had a bypass. I think the first 2 weeks I lost around 8-10 pounds then it slowed considerably and I was a steady 2-3 pounds per week loss for a few weeks then it quickly dropped to around 2 pounds/week consistently for the next 6 months. I then purposely increased calories once I hit a normal BMI at the 6 month mark from my typical 600-700 to 900 then up to 1000 and now am around 1500 maintaining. Everyone is different. I expected since I started at a low BMI for weight loss to slow quickly and taper down fast but it was really steady after the first few weeks. I never hit the typical stall either. Looking back I think my calories were too low. I barely hit 60 gram of Protein and averaged 650 calories for months. I did take body measurement and some weeks the inches would suddenly drop even with only 2 pounds lost and other weeks the measurement would stay steady. It is so hard early on to not hyperfocus on every detail, we all did it. Try to focus on following your guidelines and it will happen. Some people stall or weight loss slows, they increase calories and have a sudden drop in weight, on paper it doesn't make sense but once you are farther out you will see your progress.

I was 35 BMI. I was down 14.5 from pre op diet. I looked up my weight loss 2 weeks post op vsg and it was 10.9. So at two weeks I was 25.4 including pre op diet. That is pretty good in 4 weeks.

I’m not sure how you did pre op but a big loss there is part of the loss.

Finally, I have not gotten close to 1000 calories yet so it is very promising to me that you are losing well at that amount!

You are doing great!

Btw, I am presently down 37 total and I am now overweight and no longer obese. Very happy about that!

It sounds like you are doing amazing! My doctor is constantly on me for not getting my Water or drinking enough protien shake (anyone else have a hard time getting water in when all you can do is drink liquids? ). I know the slow weight loss is frustrating, but at least it's more than a pound a week off. It's possible your body is still getting used to the changes it's gone through.

How's your exercise level? My doctor was very strict that without increased exercise there would be no weight loss.

#1 - Get off the scale!

#2 - Re-read #1!!

Seriously.

All results are not reflected on the scale. You'll notice changes in your clothes. Other NSV (Non-Scale Victories) will be things like sitting in a chair with armrests & getting up without dragging the chair with you.

Relax - it'll happen.

I have also been losing at a slower pace. But every pound is a drop in the bucket. Now friendly advice: please weigh and measure yourself only once a week. You will only make yourself mad. Also, since you were on the lower end of the weight scale we (I am including myself) know not to expect to drop those pounds easily. The only thing we can do is work hard and eat right and hope for the best results. But please give the scale a break. 🙂

1000 calories at 14 days? I'm over 30 days out only getting 400-500 calories

      Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

      Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
