Hey guys. I’ve been all over this website and it’s been helping a lot, but I have some complications I’d like to go over before I see my NUT and nurse practitioner this Tuesday. Originally I thought my new blood pressure meds had been making me feel faint and week, but now I’m thinking it’s a deficiency of either Iron or Protein or even both. So bad to where I was doing great walking after surgery up until I started feeling like this. Now I hardly do anything besides lay down. I mean I still try to walk around the house or do whatever I can but even standing up I feel faint and have a racing heart. It’s just frustrating. I had my surgery 17 days ago if that helps. But now the more this goes on the less I am eating. Im trying very hard to get in protein but nothing’s cutting it. eggs were doing well but ever since the other day anything I put down is a struggle. I want to get shakes down because it’s the easiest way but I take a sip now and it comes right up. I think it’s just being on the liquid and soft diet that’s making me like this. Hopefully the more i advance it all comes back into play. I don’t even want carbs or sugars, I just want to be able to sit down and eat some meat or whatever and that’s that. No getting sick or anything. I know that’s a lot to ask for only 17 days out and I CAN wait. But I need to find some way of getting in protein right now. tuna was another thing I reuse but the mayo and the tuna itself was just uncomfortable to eat. I can’t fathom getting behind anything puréed so this is gonna be tough 😕 And before anyone says anything about it, please don’t mention puréed food. I just cannot do it. I’ve tried and the second it hits my mouth I gag horribly. The same way I would with the shakes. If anyone has been through the same please tell me it gets better :( I’m only 20 years old and weighed 375. Now I’m down to 315. I love the results, but I feel so week and sick

You don’t mention your Fluid intake. Dizzy + racing heart may mean dehydration. Are you getting in at least 64oz of fluid per day? At this point your hydration status is more important than food. If you can’t keep fluids down you may need IV hydration. You should call the surgeon’s office 1st thing tomorrow morning, don’t wait until Tuesday.

Hey so I am drinking plenty of fluids. I actually have been drinking so much Water I know it’s not fluids. Plus I talked to them over phone and saw my doctor last week. He thought it was blood pressure meds too. But yes it isn’t the warred and tomorrow is Monday. I can wait another day sadly lol. If u need an intake, I’d say anywhere from 2 and a half to 3 and a half water bottles a day, not including the other liquids throughout the day like a popsicle or some G2. So around 50 ounces if not A little More a day

I woke up one day and I felt the way you have been feeling. I checked my BP and it was crazy low: 70/49. I contacted my Dr and she had me discontinue them immediately. For some reason a lot of people go off their BP meds soon after surgery. Let us know what you find out Tuesday!

Now that I know how to use this I can respond properly haha. So ya I have a cuff at home. It was low, and now it’s back to slightly high. Which was normal for me. It’s been fluctuating to say the least so yes I will be sure to report back here Tuesday. I’m glad to hear tho. I think it may be ketosis since I haven’t had any sugar or carbs in time now and my body needs to get energy from fat now. The reason I think it may be that is because bad breath on top of being fatigue and week is part of signs of ketosis. It will go away it says but it’s been a full 2 weeks of feeling this now so I hope it’s something else where I can fix it on spot haha. Thank you so much

I had the SAME thing happen to me. I'm 3 weeks out as well. I was never on blood pressure meds but I went through the same thing starting about a week after. Every time I stand or do anything I felt faint and racing heart. I did go back to the hospital - I wasn't dehydrated and got in so much Water but after more IV fluids I DID feel better. The Dr's all said it was just my body and stress response to the surgery and also our bodies are literally trying to function with less than 500 calories a day right now. Our body will be tired and the Dr. mentioned some people's blood vessels just change in response to the surgery temporarily. My advice which has helped me is I started drinking electrolyte drinks. NOT electrolyte water but no sugar electrolyte drinks. and just more water. I sometimes just drink more than 64 ounces of water. I also wear compression socks which also help. I still get faint sometimes but even putting some real salt (not table salt) on my tongue helps when that happens too. My surgeon said in a couple months it should get better.

Hi

Protein waters instead of shakes could be easier to handle

Low Iron, B Vitamins (especially B 1 and 12) and electrolytes (sodium and potassium) can make you feel absolutely miserable (Bloodwork will confirm deficiencies)

Let your Team know the exact symptoms for a proper diagnosis

Good Luck 💙

I love you... lmfao thank you so much. U just saved me a lot of stress but I’m so sorry u went through the same it does suck so much haha. But awesome! I’m glad to know what’s up. Like I said I drink almost if not more than 64 ounces a day and I drink Gatorade sugar free with electrolytes but the big thing is I have hardly any Protein intake. I was getting like 25 grams of protein max after I started feeling weird and it got worse. Today I actually ate and I started feeling better already. I’m guessing once I see them, explain it all, get bloodwork done and all that they will have a sure answer. I’m just happy it’s somewhat normal and will start to get better. It’s made the physical aspect of the surgery nearly impossible.

You said you wanted some meat - you're 17 days out so eat some meat! I was cleared for soft foods at 14 days and was eating ground turkey or beef without issue!

Not to alarm u, but it should be your blood pressure. They put me on meds since it was high during surgery but those meds made it extremely low. Finally saw my nurse practitioner and she was pissed and took me off them all I mediate my. I’m feeling better but still off. Turns out she calls me next day saying she had someone go back in Irvine samples during stay at hospital and found things leading to an adrenal mass or tumor. Gotta get scanned and if it’s there possibky surgery. Laparoscopic. I don’t wanna do this at all but ya turns out that’s what’s going on. Blood pressure 😕 please see your team ASAP. I felt like **** for 3 weeks straight. Second they took me off the meds the next day I felt much better. Like I said I still feel off but it’s because of the adrenal mass they believe.

Wow! Sounds like you've been through the wringer. (If you don't know, that's how you used to "wring" your clothes out after washing them. Before automatic clothes washers. Yes, I'm old)

Please take good care of yourself. You only have one you and you deserve everything good you can give yourself.

((HUGS))

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
