Emma this is going to be a strange ride.

Keep supportive people around you and decide what relationships need to be distanced or cut off. Weight loss may end up being a topic for a while in your social circles. The good news, once your weight loss settles and the shock of your loss is over. Life becomes normal. people just except this as you.

No you are not overthinking. When I was banded in 2009 (unbanded in 2012) That's all I heard from people. Christmas Party...Oh you are not going to be able to eat....Office Birthday...Oh you can't have a cupcake...

They said it like I was on punishment or something! LOL And to be very very honest. I lost a LOT of so-called friends. Your circles will change because your life will change and sometimes that means some people have to go.

Yes the head games will start, Obviously food is a big part of all of our lives, or it was or we would not be in the FATTY forum. Sorry but i don't beat around the bush. I had the same thing from a group of people, I was a big dude and Happy hour was a common occurrence, 14 oz Steaks, Ribs and tons of Vodka got me into this mess.

I carried the weight well but was killing myself and I decided to make this decision for myself. I will admit my social life in terms of bars, eating out, and large cookouts has slowed down. One of the girls i see really hit it home with her view of this, People are intrigued by it, It is interesting to them, as you succeed they get jealous, not from the weight lose but you setting a goal and hammering it home, She has played a major role in this journey and works in the mental health industry. Build a shell and be the ice queen, I let most of the comments to just role by, but at times you may have to nicely speak up. My famous line is - There has to be something better to talk about then me getting gutted and 5 months of hell! This usually ends it quickly

I have the same friends and people I hang out with it just has changed, You have to take my attitude, F@#Ck food and screw anyone who has a view on your decision to get happy and healthy. You are the one suffering at times, working hard, Cleaning up your life,

However be careful, one thing i have found is that the way people eat and drink is disgusting, just keep your views to yourself, I made a comment a few weeks back when 50 chicken wings came to the table that was uncalled for. I quickly made a joke of it but realized I am not totally ready to be in certain situations.

As for the holidays - I have chosen to be here for many more holidays healthy, then just a few eating Cookies and santa treats.

Yes its a b***h - I told no one till recently when they thought i had Cancer or Aids! I still lie my ass off and try to avoid the surgery topic, I have seen once you Hammer the weight down and get close to the weight you want to be at it seems to die off a little, They loose focus and seem to be on to the next topic. As for how much weight you lost texts? No clue working on my health not really my weight -

The kids menu and the other snide comments role off eventually, I was getting annoyed but just let it slide by, Not worth getting aggravated over it. My X wife is large and she is the biggest pain in my ass i have, Don;t get me wrong we are good friends but this surgery/lifestyle change has her all wound up. Comments come non stop and i get freakin defensive and mean at times, But now i just role it off with one easy statement "Had to do it, Obviously only one of us is going to live longer to finish raising the kids and see grandkids, Eat out - Be alone, Got your carb fix for the day?" -

It gets better people chill out just ride out this wave of aggravation, Plus its Friday and here we go Happy hour and lots of **** food and junk and vodka -

This fear is one of the reasons that I told very few people. My closest 4 couple friends, 4 people at work and my parents/sister/wife. That's it. No one else needs to know. That group gives me all the support I need.

I don't need people telling me what I can and can't eat. In fact I'm going to actively avoid most office food stuff now - pot lucks, xmas parties, etc. At least for a year or so. I avoided them before but because I was fat and ate too much so at least it won't look different haha

It's definitely a big change and food seems to be the common denominator among friends, family, holidays etc. There will always be people that will scrutinize everything you're eating or not eating. Sometimes I think its because they didn't have the guts to make the serious lifestyle change. If those "friends" cannot understand that you're doing this to better your life then maybe they aren't really your friends.

Good luck on your journey!!!

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
