Post RNY activity restrictions?

Recommended Posts

I am wondering about post surgery restrictions - driving and stairs in particular. Please share the guidance you were given?

You will be up and around pretty soon after your surgery. They get you out of bed quite soon..

You'll probably have some lifting restrictions for a short time.

I can't remember any restrictions on driving.

There might be an issue about stairs depending on your initial weight.

I had no restrictions on stairs (I live on 2nd story). Restriction with driving only secondary to pain meds and my comfort level (about a week). 10 pound Lift restriction for 8 weeks, I think.

I"m pretty sure I was driving within about a week. I don't think I had any stair restrictions. I couldn't lift more than 10 lbs for awhile. And the only exercise I could do at first was walk. I was cleared for all exercise except for lifting weights at four weeks out. I had to wait eight weeks, I think, before I could do strength-training (that was probably the point at which I was allowed to lift more than 10 lbs, too...)

No stair restrictions , but in uk you are restricted from driving until you can do an emergency stop without issues.

As long as you are taking any pain management no driving. Also discomfort at seatbelt contact sites over incision sites. The way to look at it is, is your reaction time back to normal? If you were rear ended would the seatbelt split open the sutures when you jerked forward? You need to be walking walking walking to defer DVTs. Lastly no restriction on stairs but only activity or lifting could be done after cleared at 1month post-open appt. You gone feel weak for that few weeks anyway. If you only eating under 500 calories your body needs all that to heal. Good luck

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
