Gastric Bypass Success Stories When over 350lbs

Recommended Posts

I am curious to hear success stories from people over 350lbs before surgery. I am in this boat and realize this experience may be a little different for people who have more to lose. My date is set for October 1st and I am so excited and nervous and would like to hear some specs on weight loss throughout the process. Since everyone is so different, I would like to see some specs on SW, 3 months out, 6 months out, 1 year out!

I started out at 373, lost 57 lbs through my required six-month supervised diet + the two-week pre-op liquid diet. The morning of surgery I weighed 316.

I was down to 138 lbs by about 18 months out. Have gradually regained up to 150 (but this is fine - I'm still within a normal BMI range)

3 months out - 276

6 months out - 241

1 year out - 187

P.S. I should add that this is not typical. I worked my butt off to lose this much. My surgeon said only about 10% of his patients that start out at my BMI lose all of their excess weight. The peer-reviewed studies I've read mostly agree with that assessment. But there are lots of people out there who've done it, so it IS do-able. It just takes a lot of commitment. I almost never went off plan while I was in the weight loss phase.

That is awesome!!! What kind of exercise did you do during the weight loss phase? If you don’t mind me asking, what led to the 150lb gain even though it still kept you at a great loss overall?

Well, babies and never losing the weight after each one. Then I gained a lot more during the fat free stage. I thought if I didn't eat fat, I wouldn't gain weight. Duh!

yes I weigh 150 lbs now and have for at least a year, so a 12 lb gain. I seem to have stabilized here, though. A 10-20 lb bounce back after you hit your lowest weight is unfortunately pretty common - but this weight is still fine for me (even though part of me would love to be back in the 130s again!)

as I mentioned above, I almost never went off my food plan while I was in weight loss phase (I do occasionally now - but I still log everything that goes into my mouth and cut back when my weight starts to climb above 150).

as for exercise, I mostly did pool-based activities for cardio (e.g. Water aerobics, swimming) for probably the first year due to my weight & arthritis. I went 2-3 times a week. I also did gentle yoga a couple of times a week. Once a lot of the weight was off, I added Zumba and other types of dance cardio. I still try to do cardio 2-3x a week and yoga a couple of times a week. I've also done a fair amount of walking this summer - 30-45 minutes at a time. I really should add in some strength training, but I hate it. Sometimes I'll do it for a couple of weeks and then give up. I really wish I liked it... So in summary, I'm not a gym rat, but I do get some type of exercise most days of the week.

I started the process at 415 lbs. at the start of the six month diet and exercise program. I was 360.8 on the day of surgery, and as of today, I am 267.7 lbs. My highest weight was 427.

I don't exercise nearly as much as I should, but I do swim and mow the lawn. I also walk around my work a lot during the day. I've found I'm able to walk around a lot more in general.

My highest ever known weight was 325lbs.

Over the past 20 years, I lost from 325 down to 218lbs during breast cancers treatment and post bc. But i started regaining at an alarming rate and my onc was very concerned the cancer would return. It took 2 years to convince me of the medical need for this surgical intervention. I'd regained back up to 287lbs.

I could always lose weight (although slowly), but keeping it off has been a clear challenge. So I lost from 287lbs down to 222 morning of surgery. Today I'm maintaining at 135lbs. I made goal in 9 months (150lbs).

It is very very possible to do this thing. It may not be the "average". I won't lie. I'm an outlier and extremely focused. I've gone hungry a lot -- and still go hungry. But that's ok. I refuse to let food/hunger dictate when or how much I eat or how well-behaved I am with food. This body feels fabulous and I intend to take care of it!

I know you can do this too. I'm nothin' unusual--just focused on treating my head while maximizing the mileage I get from my tool.

All of your journeys are sooo encouraging to read! For those of you who did not say, can you tell me how long your journey took from beginning to end?

I know this will not be easy but I am so ready for this shot at success once and for all! My 4 week pre-op was this morning and the diet begins tomorrow. This has just gotten real!

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
