So what are you unable to eat now?

I can't eat boiled okra.

That's about it. Everything else is wide open and A-OK!

(Oh wait! Snap! I couldn't eat it BEFORE surgery either--my whole life even--makes me hurl every time! :D )

Steak is actually one of my favorite post-surgery foods! I sautée a 150 gram piece in a cast Iron skillet and eat around half of it and have the rest for lunch the next day.

I cannot tolerate rubbery scrambled eggs or some leafy uncooked greens in salads. Also if something has a lot of oil or butter on it (like very buttery toast) that disagrees with me as well. Sugar I can tolerate fairly well but it definitely makes me crash hard so I avoid it.

I tried some Halo Top ice cream and it caused me to vomit and have dumping syndrome

I don't even like ice cream but was watching my husband eat some and had an odd craving (odd as stated before...I don't really care for ice cream)..to have a bite some time in the 'Near future'.

Thank you for your post - my odd craving is gone for now. Have NO desire to encounter my first dumping episode although it seems we are all bound to have it happen at some point. I just PRAY mine happens when I'm at home!

actually, most RNY'ers don't dump - they say up to 30% do, so if true, that leaves 70% of us who don't. I've never dumped, although I don't feel that great if I eat a ton of fat or sugar.

Eggs..can't eat scrambled eggs. Haven't tried fried yet. Was in such utter agony from both times I have tried eggs that it will be a DANG LONG LONG LONG LONG time before I try again.

I was amazed to see ppl posting that they could eat popcorn. Having not tried as I'm still only 6 weeks after post-op, I just think of how 'hard' popcorn feels to me...but I guess, well heck, it's a carb so does it...go all soft when it is in your pouch?? Not knocking anyone for eating a carb! I'm truly fascinated as I don't trust my picky pouch and am amazed that some folks can actually eat popcorn! So weird and amazing.

Was never a huge popcorn fan either and since I'm on mostly a very low carb way of eating, I probably won't try it but my curiosity has been peaked. Just like I'm still stunned that my 'Ms. Picky Pouch' has an issue with a dang scrambled egg!

REALLY? I hadn't done as much RNY research as up to a few weeks before original surgery date, I was scheduled for VSG. Ended up with an RNY and my date getting pushed back a few weeks but was so into getting thru pre-op diet that I didn't get a great deal of research done on RNY to be honest.

Watch me be a 30-percenter ;) I'm pretty hard core on the Keto front although I'll have to reconsider the use of artificial sweetners down the road when I'm ready to introduce more things into my 'way of eating....

it's supposedly pretty easy to manage. It usually happens when they eat too much sugar at one sitting, so if you limit (or avoid) sugar, you shouldn't dump.

Yes. For me it's a "too many carbohydrates" in a meal. But it can also be "too many fats" in a meal.

I’ve got the Iron sleeve too - nothing bothers it based on ingredients, but I have to pay attention to quantity. Some foods I can eat quite a lot of without problem - others I can have a few bites and that’s it, I’m done. I don’t have dumping syndrome that I know of?

Most important is paying attention to how you’re feeling as you’re eating, and tracking any negative/full sensations. Like fries - I can eat them, it won’t make me sick, but I eat ten and I am done for the entire meal. Meanwhile if I start with the burger, I can eat the majority of that without feeling full. If you measured mass I’m sure I’m eating way more burger than fries, but for some reason the fries fill me up.

As a rule, anything sugary or fatty will fill me way faster than an equivalent mass of protein/carb/whatever. It’s actually been really convenient since I have a couple spoons of ice cream and I am genuinely done. The trick is not eating through the full feeling, or artificially spacing the food out to ensure you can eat more of it.

I was wondering, are there any foods you ate before that you can no longer eat since your sleeve surgery? And if you can't eat certain things, why not?

chicken.

Just does not taste/feel right.

I choose to no longer eat rice ... don't have steamed rice, fried rice, etc.

I avoid pretty much all crumbed and battered foods and most deep fried.

I enjoy chips/fries but only four to six at a time with a meal these days. Too many empty calories.

I’m good with not having any off limit foods. It was one of the reasons I went with a VSG. It was important to me to be able to be flexible with my diet.

Yeah, that's why I wanted to go with a sleeve too. Although I just met with the surgeon for the first time yesterday and he wants to do a bypass! I just don't know if I should insist on a sleeve or not 😓

I do this as well because of my diabetes...Some Chinese food minus the rice is very good :)

Thanks for all the replies, this is an interesting thread!

I find that most of the stuff people have issues with, like bread and sweets, I avoid anyway because of diabetes, and I don't even want them now. But I just met with the surgeon and he said he wants me to have a bypass and not a sleeve, and I was all set on a sleeve!

Gonna have to hang out on the bypass forums and see if I can get used to the idea.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!

      Today was rough...
I've been experiencing a headache all day today that just won't go away. I'm thinking it's now progressing into a migraine. Does anyone else get headaches from taking vitamin B12? I did some research and learned that usually a lack of B12 causes headaches. But I've noticed when I take it, I have reoccurring headaches. 😫
