I am 8 days post sleeve and I hunger constantly. I am getting my Protein in, and sticking (reluctantly) to liquids and puree'd foods (I threw some chicken and Unjury protein in a blender). Last night, i had some egg drop Soup and almost ate the whole quart between an early dinner and a snack a few hours later. Is it normal to be hungry?!? The egg drop was the only point where I consumed too much of something and it bothered me.

I don't know how this is possible. What are y'all doing?!?

Man I'm really sorry to hear this - I don't have answers for you but will be following this thread for future reference and I'm sure it will be helpful when the WLS vets chime in!

I love the attachment sad plate you added lol - I mean it's sad but cute. Anyway, hang in there, chin up - you'll get through this. 👊

P.S. I highly doubt nearly any experience here is one you/we face alone, someone can always relate.

Yes. It's normal. Please don't over eat at this point. Please take it slowly. Drink Water when hunger hits. It may also be stomach acid. Are you taking a PPI? Please don't advance your diet ahead of your doc's plan. You can do this!

thanks for replying! Aside from my accidental overeating of the egg drop, I am avoiding overeating as best I can.

Dude, there is nothing "accidental" about falling into a quart of egg drop Soup at 8 days post op. And are you supposed to be able to eat purees at 8 days? You do not want to pop a suture line. :( You gotta own mistakes to change them. ((hugs))

PPI = omeprazole (H2 acid blocker), nexium, prilosec, etc

Ah, I was not prescribed nor suggested any acid blockers.

Accidental is easy when it goes down without pain and you go down the slippery slope of watering it down (doctors instructions) and literally forgetting that you drank 4 ounces already. Also - my wife just corrected me --- PINT, not quart, whew!

As far as Purees go - pureed Soup is on my funnel diet which starts 24 hours after surgery, Unjury chicken broth + boiled chicken sounded soupy to me. I will check it out with the team tho --- I would hate it if I am somehow misunderstanding what they mean by "pureed soup"

I found that I went past a mealtime once by about an hour , and I was hungry , and could have easily eaten too much . So I try to make sure I don’t do that

now .Does anyone get a stomach ache when eating ?

PEGGO, funny you ask, today is the first I experienced a mild tummy ache with food and I don't know what to make of it! Even soft foods like cottage cheese or yogurt.
I decided to go back to Clear Liquids for a few days!!

An acid blocker might really help with your hunger, excess acid mimics hunger.

Did the clear liquids fix it? Maybe it’s just the new stomach getting used to things. I haven’t looked it up yet but I will . What stage are at nowDeedee?

So the idea of eating liquids and things without texture or grain is that they don't want to stimulate the gut to start "churning" and scrunching like it does when solid or semi-solid foods are introduced. When I was on full liquids I was allowed: clear fluids without sugar or caffeine, Protein Drinks, and yogurt that was low carb/low sugar and free of any fruit that was thinned down to pourable consistency (think Soup texture). I was also allowed ice pops (sf) and sf Jello.

The problem with eating pureed Soups thinned down at this stage is that even pureeing chicken will leave a sludgish texture that has grit or grain to it. And it will cause your stomach to grind too much.

So don't try to game the system. If it doesn't appear on your plan, don't do it. LOL.

You CAN make up cream soups with Fairlife FF Milk. Strain it and slowly add in a scoop of unflavored Protein in order to up your protein content of the meal. That would add smooth consistency, absence of texture and should help satiety by upping your protein.

And FYI, 1 pint should take you about 8 hours or more to consume at your stage. Each meal 2 hours apart and 4oz per meal approximately.

According to my surgeon, at this stage, pureed soups are okay and my meals are 6oz each, not 4. I am guessing our surgeons just define post op diets differently. Thanks for all of your responses!

      So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

        It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

      I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

        I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

      How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

        Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

        I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

        I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again. 
      I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent. 
      I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

      Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
      For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
      For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
      Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
      Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
      It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
