6 months post op.
I had literally 3 sips of mimosa for my 30th birthday and got pretty hammered. It was surreal. My husband had to help me walk! I was warned it would happen but it was kind of funny. Oh well. I don’t drink a lot anyways, hardly ever. Thats probably a contributing reason why... 🤪

I've had a drink (or two) exactly three times since my surgery over four years ago. I also get drunk really fast.

Same here ...

I was a light weight when I first started drinking again, because I had abstained for nearly 6 months during my weight loss phase. But now I have nearly the same tolerance as I did pre WLS. It amazes me honestly, because I am nearly half my previous size.

I wonder if the "quick drunk" thing is more common in RNY patients since the pyloric valve is bypassed. liquids go directly into our intestines (and right into our blood stream). I know alcoholism is a risk with any WLS, but the rapid intoxication may be more of an issue with RNY. I don't know this for a fact, though...

I was told for RNY patients, one drink is about the equivalent of three.

Whenever I have a drink, it def hits me quick (Bypass) but I also sober up quickly as well.

I’m VSG. Since I’m not eating much carbs these days, that could have also been contributing factor! My Surgeon said that I can expect to be “cheap drunk,” but apparently doesn’t phase some patients!

Okay so I definitely was not a novice drinker before WLS, and I’ve indulged a few times since.
I’ve had VGS, not bypass.

First drink: hits hard and fast. Will usually be pretty tipsy after 4oz wine, but the effects wear off fairly fast.
For some reason, a second drink doesn’t phase me more than the first and I’ve only ever had >3 drinks once (NOLA in July). I had a night where I had a glass of wine with dinner (took over 90 mins to eat and drink together) then I had 3 old fashions at a jazz club.
I kinda-sorta remember the walk home, but it would’ve been a lot more hazardous had hubs not been with me.

I have the occasional drink. Once every few months and one will definitely do me and I don’t drive afterwards. It definitely hits me.

I think what you mix alcohol with also makes a difference. About 3 1/2 months out I tried a prickly pear margarita when we were on vacation in Santa Fe. Literally one sip and I felt hot and nauseated so I put it aside. We then ate and I tried again after 30 minutes with the same result. Now, I only drink tequila over ice, bourbon and Water or vodka martinis and I have no problems. It does affect my ability to lose though..... I was a daily drinker before surgery and pretty much back to that at this point.
