Starting soft foods at 2 weeks out

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I am 2 weeks out from surgery and got the ok to start soft foods. I scrambled an egg and ate it slowly with 2 minutes between each bite. It was truly better than sex lol!

I feel satisfied but certainly not "full" which is I believe what we are striving for. I feel guilty though because my instruction sheet said I should only have 2 - 4 teaspoons.

After 2 weeks of only liquids and stopping the shakes 3 days ago- (they were starting to make me gag because I never liked any of them) I was going to eat the whole egg as long as it went down smoothly! Any thoughts fellow gastric bypass friends?

I think I ate 1/2 an egg that first meal--also at 2 weeks. :) Congrats on graduating. Eat by the book--don't chase the satisfied or full feeling cuz it's not really working so well right now for most of us. I think it's 1-2oz by volume at that point if I remember correctly?

Ugh, the food addict in me doesn't like to hear the truth - You're right, I need to go by the book for the best results. It's just not easy for me obviously or I wouldn't be in this predicament in the first place. It's hard to face that my relationship with food must change. Thanks.

Yes. It's a seminal moment when you realize that and can get through the grieving so you have room and energy to learn new ways. It's totes worth it in the long run!

A couple of thoughts here -

most find that their sex life improves after surgery.....

maybe a slippery slope to be enjoying food that much?

On a serious note, do follow the doc's guidelines, as early on our "full" sensations may not be what they used to be, what with everything (including the nerves) being disrupted down there. For some, the first "full" signals are when things come back up - not a good way to find "satisfaction". Eating slow with breaks in between bites as you did is a good practice until you figure out what capacity you have for what kinds of foods (they differ, and will change over time, so it's a long experiment.)

Measure everything, took me a long time to know what my new “full” felt like

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
