Phentermine After Weight Loss Surgery

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

I have a question... Has anyone taking Phentermine after weight loss surgery? I’m 2 year out and I’m considering getting some just to loose the extra weight and get to my goal. Because I have been stalled for 7 months. I just have 30 more pounds before I reach my goal. Thanks.

Phentermine can't be taken for long periods of time. As soon as you stop taking it, your hunger will come back with a vengeance. I lost 80 lbs. on it before surgery and when I had gained 70 back... I finally started thinking about surgery. Some doctors, who I consider good and smart, won't even prescribe it anymore, because you're just setting yourself up to fail.

Yeah, I'd be nervous about the raging hunger that comes back after the 3 or 4 good months you get out of it as well. You'd need some serious discipline I would think to make that work. Maybe not worth that risk. Nothing beats good old fashioned calorie counting and exercise, unfortunately.

Phentermine does work, and you still have your surgery to curb your portions after using it. It still takes work either way. I think bashing anyone's attempt to get on track is wrong, getting there, then staying there is why we had surgery. If it was simply calories in, calories out, and exercise wouldn't we already be there and not need surgery in the first place? I used it for a short time but after 2 days it kept me awake for like 20 hours several days....and that I couldn't handle. There is also diethylpropion and some phentermine combinations too. If regular doc won't prescribe, bariatric ones will, mine did.

Here's another option/tool to consider if the med cannot be prescribed/doesn't work well for you :

The med did nothing for me to be honest. Maybe for the first day or so, but after that it didn't really work.

I don't consider trying to help someone as "bashing." You may have a different opinion, but there's no need for hostility.

Who bashed? Did someone delete their post or are you being super dramatic? None of us need added drama or negativity here and none of us need silencing for giving our opinion respectfully when asked.

OP: I loved phentermine and have used it several times but the re-gain and increased hunger after using it wasn't worth it to me. I haven't tried it post surgery. The effects post surgery might be different. You could always try it and if it doesn't work then stop it. Maybe with the surgery it won't be as hard going off of it. If you do try it please post your experience so we can all learn from each other.

Ok, so I admit to having a bit of a knee jerk response by using the word 'bashing'. No harm intended.

Everything on BP is just sharing opinions.

Just to reiterate, phentermine after wls could be an entirely different situation than prior to surgery and as drastic as major surgery is, I don't see trying pharmaceuticals as anything evil if used with knowledge and supervision.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
