Recommended Posts

Oh wow! @Cheeseburgh shared this new tool on another thread and I thought it was so awesome, that I wanted to start a new thread where we can come do our tests and post them so we can keep track of our progress!!

It's called the Smart Body Mass Index and is supposed to take into account your personal metrics. So go ahead, let's try it out and see if we think it's accurate! I love mine. Let's all post our reports!

Here's the LINK!!

Thanks for sharing the link Cheeseburgh!!!

Yay!!! That's outstanding!!! Congrats on being at goal and being at a BMI of 22!!! Woot!!!! And congrats on your SBMI score of 33/70!!!

What's cool for me (cuz remember I'm so average), is that it does affirm that the old BMI chart works for me too. The two are I think almost identical. But I loved how in depth this tool went into explaining things. I'll post my write up below, so others can see how cool the info is! :D I love it when science works. ;) Don't you?

Ok, so I used my weight today of 135lbs. My SBMI score is 34/70 (Normal range is 30/70-39/70). My BMI is 23. And here's the cool write-up it gives for my age and activity. (click to enlarge)

Here's mine:

Health aspects

Your weight is at a somewhat elevated level; in our view, it may be less than optimal for your health. Contrary to the WHO classification of "obese", we hold the statement that you are only "overweight".

Your body fat mass seems to be a slightly above average. But health ought not be affected provided your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels remain at moderate values. This could be more likely if you have a higher muscle mass and a lower amount of body fat.

SBMI = 43/70

This assessment is based on the newly developed Smart Body Mass Index. Its ideal range is between 30/70 and 39/70.

Your Smart Body Mass Index (SBMI) is calculated as 43/70 or "43 points out of 70".

Weight stability

At this weight level, you are at risk of gaining more weight. If you manage to maintain your current weight, you have reached your first and most important goal. Weight loss should only take the second place.

Your SBMI will decrease by about one point within ten years if you manage to keep your 195 pounds stable. This is due to the fact that the optimal, i.e. the "healthiest" BMI range increases with age, thus reaching higher BMI values.

Weight management

The best you can do is eat healthy food and increase your fitness. This will boost your health, whatever the case. If you lose weight in the process, all the better.

Your target weight of 140 pounds

Your weight target is in the right direction but very ambitious. A fast weight loss of 55 pounds kilograms could be the initial phase of a yo-yo effect. It may be safer to try 11 pounds first, stabilize on the level of 184 pounds and then set a new target, if this seems sensible.

By the way, being fat without tobacco is better than being slim due to nicotine. The best advice for smokers is to postpone the weight loss and stop smoking first. To curb a weight gain, the following suggestions may be helpful.

Nutrition

Think over your diet. Eat a variety of foods that you like, optimally including five servings of fruit and/or vegetables a day. Avoid eating too sweet, too fat and too much.

Your current low-carb diet

Low-carb diets may help to reduce body weight and improve blood sugar an lipid levels. However, in contrast to a Mediterranean diet, low-carb diets are much less sustainable. Moreover, they likely increase disease and mortality risk, despite short term improvement of some risk factors. If you want to stop dieting, do it step by step.

Physical activity

Do physical exercise at least for half an hour daily at moderate to vigorous intensity. Walking or cycling may be better for your joints than jogging.

Congrats lady!!! Congrats on your amazing hard work and diligence!!! Woooot!!!!

You are so close to your green area!!!! And I love the advice of doing small stepping stones. Throughout my WLS journey, I'd "set" a goal. But I actually only focused on a single decade. Cuz anything else always overwhelmed me and made me feel hopeless like I'd never achieve it. I knew exactly how many days it took me to get through a decade of weight. LOL!!!

You got this girl!!!

You are already in your optimal weight range. Losing weight would add no benefit to your health.

Nutrition

Think over your diet. Eat a variety of foods that you like, optimally including five servings of fruit and/or vegetables a day. Avoid eating too sweet, too fat and too much.

Your current low-carb diet

Your weight is below average: Do you really need this diet?

Low-carb diets may help to reduce body weight and improve blood sugar an lipid levels. However, in contrast to a Mediterranean diet, low-carb diets are much less sustainable. Moreover, they likely increase disease and mortality risk, despite short term improvement of some risk factors. If you want to stop dieting, do it step by step.

I got a BMI of 22 and and SBMI of 33/70.

I really found this chart useful as I was losing. It made me feel more optimistic and realistic. I’m glad others might too, I figured everyone knew about it.

*laughing* We have been the same weight for quite a while now. Yep, our print outs are the same.

Thanks for the compliment. Oh girl, my booty, tummy and boobs are issues. My butt is a melting pancake that ripples down the back of my thighs. Things look so much better with spanks, a good bra and clothing.

After seeing @BlueCrush plastics and reading some of the threads. Humm I thinking about doing it.

OH Lort! I thought you had escaped the melting candle old-lady ass outcome! You look round and bubbly! :D So well toned. How do you disguise that in your running shorts? Cuz I don't see a bit of it!!! But yeah, tums and boobs...sigh.

You should totally do the plastics girl! Doesn't @BlueCrush look fabulous and smokin'?!!!!! Woot! Very inspiring pics for all of us with the baggy saggies.

NOPE 😂 my goal weight was 155-160lbs bmi 28 according to my Surgical PA & I achieved that long ago (150 is just a number I put in long ago and never removed)

So no further bariatric/fitness goals to achieve

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?
      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
