Drinking and eating same time

Recommended Posts

How many of you drink and eat at the same time? I’ve tried to follow the guidelines of not drinking 15 minutes before eating and waiting 30 minutes after eating. But I’d really like to drink during meals...

It’s sort of a cardinal rule of WLS, I would follow it

I don't drink with my meals. I wait until before and after.

9 months out. I don't drink during nor at least 30 minutes after eating.

I do, however, drink right up to the start of eating a meal.

I integrated this rule into my life and don't deviate too much from it.

I don't ever drink during a meal and I wait at least 30 minutes after to drink again. The only exception would be if I need to take meds that need to be taken with food. In that circumstance, I drink only what's necessary to swallow the pill/vitamin.

However, I drink right up til starting of a meal.

I was told to avoid drinking 30 before & after meals. My nutritionist did say it was ok to SIP during a meal if you’re dying for a drink. However, I was also told that if you’re getting thirsty, you should check with yourself To see if you’re full. Listen to your body & good luck!

How does this no drinking after and before meals relate to food with liquid like Soups and liquidy foods?

Well, unless my "liquidy food" is entirely the same consistency as Water, it has a short stay in my stomach. Maybe not the same stay as solid foods, but eating ANYTHING with even the most minimal substance I get full and stay full. The length of time I stay full may vary.

EX: I routinely eat Soup, all kinds of soup. Love it! That includes creamy Soups and brothy soups. These soups usually have some substance to it or even some solids like meat and vegetables. I get FULL. I can also get full on puddings and jellos. *And that's 2 years out!

So, I guess my point here is, if I can get full on these things, why would I "wash away" the food that's in my stomach by drinking after I eat? If I do that, it defeats the purpose of my surgery and I would easily get hungry again. Besides, I find it uncomfortable to drink if there is something in my stomach. Therefore, if I've eaten anything I follow that rule. If my food has the same consistency as water and with no discernable solids, I would consider that drinking. (broth, popsicle, shaved ice)

Sipping a little Water during meals isn't a cause for concern but drinking a glass or two may interfere with digestion. It is best to drink fluids before and two hours after meals as this helps in the absorption of nutrients, researchers have found.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
