Chillax! I had a 6 month plateau & was feeling freaked but have since lost 23 pounds in a little over a month. Stay on track & focus on exercise & what you eat. Calories in vs calories out still matters. You got this!

Why did you plateau for so long? Bad eating habits?

I don’t know what qualifies as an older sleever, however I am 58 and 1 pound shy of my goal weight 11 months later. I’ve had to work harder and push myself to get here. I didn’t focus on cardio and strength training until I was about 5-6 months in. I was walking daily prior to that. My weight loss really slowed down so I knew I had to rev up my metabolism. Much to my dismay it worked...

I’ve come to terms with Im going to have to exercise and eat right the rest of my life. I’m ok with that, I feel 100% better.

I LOVE iced coffee, here is what I do. I buy Starbucks cold brew black at the grocery store. It comes in a 48 oz jar. I put it over ice with sugar free vanilla coffee creamer (35 calories) or add a flavored Protein Shake and it tastes great for a fraction of the calories. I have this every single morning without fail.

Keep going, you’ve got this.

Great tips! Thank you💗

I worry that if I drop the calories below 1400 to lose, then I will have to permanently live on 1000/day forever - not sure I can do that...

We are almost surgery stat twins. Same height, starting weight (I was at 235 lbs) and same surgery date!

EDIT: oops, I see now that you were sleeved in 2017 (I was 2018)...but the same still applies... :)

If it eases your concern at all, I'm not sure that dropping your current calories to lose will automatically mean you will have to live permanently at a lower maintenance calorie level later on. I was basically at 500-600 calories for the first 6-7 months post op (I was even below 300 the first 1-2 months). I'm almost 9 months post-op now and in maintenance, and MFP tells me I've been averaging about 1500* a day and my moving weight average is actually still going down (albeit at fractions of pounds), so I actually still need to up that amount.

*NOTE: this 1500 is an average, I don't actually eat this much every day. I seem to tend to split my days between low cal days and high cal days. So I'll have days where I eat what I call "normally", (800-1000 and low carbs), and then there would be days where I would eat much higher calorie/higher carb foods (like when I go out to eat or go to parties/get-togethers/etc, or if I have a relatively higher snack day, lol)

Is it too early to be concerned about not having enough weight loss? My restriction has lessened and I'm losing at a snail's pace. I'm so concerned. I lost about 5 pounds in June.
Should I have had gastric bypass? How early is it to consider a revision? Help!!
What foods are you eating?

I eat yogurt for Breakfast every day. I had chicken salad for lunch and I'm planning on having eggs for dinner. I'm not eating a bunch of crap. I can now get in more food above my 80 grams of Protein, so I eat vegetables and a serving of fruit. Today I will have 10 Rainier cherries as they are in season here.

You're going to go through stalls, that's part of the process, totally normal. You're still fairly new out. Give it time.

I'm not sure, are you speaking of me or Seahawks fan? I would consider another surgery down the road if I didn't get to a decent goal. My Dr wanted me to do DS, but I was not willing to do that at the time. I have diabetes and need to lowe more weight to get it into remission.

Thankfully the scale is moving ever so slowly the last 2 days. I've been in a 2 week stall, and I do not take in enough calories that I shouldn't be losing weight.

I'm 4 months post-op and had a very frustrating stall last month where I only lost 5 lbs. despite adequate calorie intake, exercise, etc. I tried increasing my calories, then increasing my exercise, and I got nowhere. So, I took the advice of another poster on this forum and took a break. I kept my calories in the 1200-1500 range but reduced my exercise from 45-60 minutes, 6 days a week to 15-20 minutes. It was difficult for me to do that because I've become addicted to my time on the treadmill and my fun workout videos, but I did it. I gave my body some time off to reset and then got right back to my routine after a week. I've been losing 3-4 pounds per week ever since.

I understand how you feel. I've had a stall for just about 2 weeks and also lost 5.1 pounds in June. I've only lost 2 pounds since July 1st. I feel a little unsure why, because I still don't eat that much that I should ney be losing quicker. I'm a week away from being 5 months post-op and my 6 month checkup is in 5 weeks. I don't want to disappoint my Dr's. But, I will try eating less, because I want to get to 75 pounds loss by then.

I agree, you still need to watch calories.

It also depends on your age and gender. If you are over 40 it's gonna be a bit slow but the younger ones here seem to lose faster. I am still pre op for the sleeve and have that same fear, I just figure, I'll have the surgery and if my sleeve isn't tight enough I'll fool my self and not go over 600 cals a day

It happens! I'm 21 mo post op sleeve/ 4 mo post bypass, and I still suck gettin calories. But don't focus on the number. I know that's hard, because that's our validation that the surgery is working. What keeps me motivated is that I'm still losing inches even if the number isn't moving. You'll still notice your clothes are loose ;). Stay positive, stay motivated, and keep following the plan.

Thanks so much! I've lost a couple more pounds and I'm so happy! At 69 pounds lost!

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
