Endoscopy with Bravo pH monitoring

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had the endoscopy with the Bravo pH monitoring? Apparently I have to wear a recorder afterwards and keep a food diary. My doctor is trying to decide if the sleeve or RNY is better for me with this test. My question is, do you feel the monitoring device in your esophagus at all? Any issues? I have had a regular endoscopy before and it was pretty painless.

Hello!

Years ago I had one of these. It wasn't like a endoscopy for me, they did it while I was sitting up and wide awake. The tube and monitor went in my nose and I had to swallow it. But, they probably have a better way now. I could feel it, but you may not. Hope it goes well for you!

Nope, just a very wee bit, and as it passes on through your G.I. tract you feel absotively nothing. Mine passed out at W-M, let the local sewer authority have it. Only knew because it was there when wiping.

Didn't feel the monitor at all. They put it in while I was under. You'll likely also have to carry around a little external monitor (about the size of a box of cards) to note when/if you feel reflux.

I did also have a monometry (measures the strength and muscle coordination of your esophagus when you swallow), which you have to do while awake.

I just had this done last week. There was nothing to it. I did have slight chest pain the first day from the inserted capsule.

Yesterday I got it done. I do feel it, especially when I eat. It feels like food gets stuck and I have to drink something to make it go away. I also had a hard time finding a comfortable position sleeping because it felt like the monitor was pulling if that makes sense. The good part is after Friday I can get rid of this thing. The bad part is I can't take any heartburn meds (including tums) until I'm done with it.

bmore4peace,

That is how it went for me, it was miserable and oh the heartburn. Afterwards they told me that I make a lot of acid. You think? :)

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
