Truly accurate nutritional tracking app?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know of an app that tracks TRUE nutritional numbers? I've been using Baritastic app to track my macros (protein, carbs, sugar, Fiber, etc.). But I find it rarely deducts the correct amount of fiber so the "net carb" count is far too high. And it's difficult for me to track whole foods and items made with multiple ingredients, thus no bar code

Suggestions?

I use MyFitnessPal and it's about as good as you make it. LOL. I use mainly raw ingredients and use the USDA values. So everything I search for, I try to say, "USDA cucumber with peel" and use the one in gram weights with the USDA number in it. Or things like "USDA, beef, top sirloin, trimmed to zero fat, raw". That kind of thing.

Other times, estimates are just fine for if I'm eating out or whatever. I might say Chuy's enchiladas, or On The Border Queso. Whatevs. It'll get me close. I also try to pick the highest entry during those reports. There aren't that many of them, so I don't worry.

I use a resident program called Nutribase, which is a slightly lightened version of what they sell to doctors and RDs (lightened mostly in that it can only handle a few "clients" rather than hundreds) as any of the online apps when we started this around fifteen years ago sucked, particularly when trying to handle menus for more than one person.

These apps are only as good as the databases they use, typically USDA and the manufacturers, (Nutribase also draws from Canadian gov databases, as well), so one product is unlikely to be any more "accurate" for what you are looking for than another.

If you are worried about how net carbs are being calculated, you are way overthinking the problem, as that has virtually no impact on your WLS success. The fiber is important to keep track of to help keep things moving and the overall calories largely govern your loss rate. For the rest of it, learn to eat good quality food and the rest pretty much takes care of itself. With things like carbs ( and fats, when that was the big diet thing) quality is a lot more important than quantity. 60-70 g of high quality complex carbs from fruits, vegetables, whole grains, etc., is a lot better for you than 20-30 g of junk carbs from artificial sweeteners and frankenfoods.

Note - I never worried about carb and fat counts and still had to slow down my loss rate as I got to the six month mark.

CRON-O-Meter is a very good one. Available both as app and on the web.
Thank you. A brief look at it's website indicates a focus on caloric information. Do you know if carbohydrates are ALSO a part of their data banks and calculations? I'd love any user experience info you'd be willing to share. Thanks again[emoji873]

The focus of CRON-O-Meter is not really on calories. You can track and look at tons of nutrients, this includes of course the basic macro information as well.

You can customize a lot of what nutrients you want to see in the diary, e. g. if you want to look at how much tryptophan you're getting you can choose to make that nutrient visible on the diary.

If you don't want to look at a certain nutrient because you're not interested in it you can choose that nutrient not to be displayed.

Have you tried it already? I personally think it's the best out there since years and they're still getting better.

I personally haven't tracked in a whole while though but it was very helpful in terms of getting all your micronutrients in.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
