Lies to tell people about what surgery I am having

Recommended Posts

Hepatic focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH). It is basically a growth/nodule in the liver that shouldn't affect anything or be cancerous, and can stay the same for years. But if there is rapid growth of the nodule, they will do surgery to remove it. Recovery time is 6 weeks,and you have to do a healthy liver diet to reduce stress on the liver before and after surgery. High in Protein, low in carbs and sugar, low glycemic index. If you don't feel well,blame it on the liver enzymes or that your body doesn't tolerate fatty foods and sugar as well since the surgery. People don't understand all the technical stuff so they hear the explanation and don't ask many questions. I thought about using gallbladder as the excuse, but I heard gall stones are not uncommon when you lose weight rapidly and my luck I'll end up needing my gallbladder removed at some point.

Hopefully, no one has a husband like mine. While out on the boat with neighbors I overheard my dear husband say to them, "well once my wife has her WLS I'll have to cook for myself as she won't be able to eat what I like. So much for keeping secrets. Oh well. Still waiting for my insurance company for news.

Lol!! I'm sorry that made me laugh! I'm very proud of your sense of humor about dear husband's lack of discretion!!! Good luck with your insurance, fingers crossed for you!

And is he now Treading Water Somewhere? Or perhaps, having a Recovering Wife will be Punishment Enough!
Don't have a Husband anymore, but I do have a Son, had to take over some of the functions! Tomkitten would tell You,it is Minor Miracle he did not go Bald or at least, go Gray! I was a Stormin' Norma for a while! Oh I could look pale and Wan in public but behind the scenes it was Katie Bar The Door! Instead of Calgon Take Me Away, it was" Save Me PLEASE Save me!" He would have joined the French Foreign Legion if he could have found an application and be able to read French! I can, 5 years of the Language but C'est Dommage , I WOULD NOT HELP anybody at that point! But it has been 9 and a half months, he has f8nalky come out of hiding and His Nervous Twitch is getting much better! LOL, you will live, if not, post- death is Not Painful!

So very funny. It is an adjustment and my husband has been through it before, but he traveled a lot and was home only weekends. So I had my dog and he would love me no matter what.

You see, I'm paranoid. My thought process is this: If I say hiatal hernia, once they see me dropping weight they will think I lied about the surgery and know that I did have stomach surgery but not the one I said.

Maybe a simple vacation abroad will do it? I wont get to use my sick time but it might be worth the hassle of trying to explain myself.

Sorry, didn't realize you quoted me until just now. I plan to tell people that the initial weight I lost from the "hiatal hernia surgery" motivated me enough to start exercising, eat right, and work my butt off. Who knows, maybe down the road I'll just be honest and tell people I had the surgery done. It'd be nice to get to the point where I don't care at all what other people think. Best of luck to you. When do you have your surgery? Or did you already have it?

I am scheduled for July 30. Prior to this I had the lap band and lost almost 100 pounds in one year. I didn't tell anyone and really when I started out I was so heavy that losing 40 pounds really didn't show much. It wasn't until I changed my clothing size that some people noticed. The people I worked closely with commented on how nice I looked and some of those I confided in and shared my journey. When I explained how difficult the journey was and how my health was in serious danger they were very supportive. The others did not ask and I did not offer. I just lived my journey for 7 years. Then the band failed. So now here I go again. This time the eating is easier as I'm used to the Protein first, veggies second. I will choose to have no bread as that is a real passion of mine. I wish you luck on your journey. Be kind to yourself.

I didn't really lie, but chose my words carefully. I told people that I was eating a high Protein diet, seeing a nutritionist and working out, amongst other things. No one is ever asked me what the other things were. 🤷‍♂️

HW = 360
SW = 292
GW = 220 reached 3/7/18
CW = 210 @ 6'5"
150 pounds lost!

Earlier in this thread, I chose the idea of disclosing Gall Bladder surgery. However, in another thread, about informing friends & family, I made a different suggestion.

As I don’t like telling lies to anyone. It’s a horrible habit & really unnecessary. When people ask about my weight loss, I’m just going to say that I’m following a strict weight loss program closely monitored by my physician. It’s not a lie & the surgical procedure is none of their business anyway.

I had a lot of nosy coworkers as well. And the gossip about the “unknown” no matter what it was about was outrageous! When I had a previous surgery, I didn’t tell anyone what it was for. The super asked me for auth to disclose to staff and I refused. I loved hearing the rumors about me! Some folks were very inventive in their attempts to get me to “spill”. I never did. Some folks got very angry and expressed their anger to me. I still kept silent.

One of my coworkers actually brought up the issue at a staff mtg. The super asked me to comment. I politely stated that a was overwhelmed with my coworkers concerns, however, my healthcare is a very personal issue and it should remain as such. And that it is never a demonstration of professionalism to share with anyone during working hrs, their personal issues, no matter what they may be. You’re right if you are thinking I was not a personal favorite from then on. However, no coworker ever wasted my time with useless gossip after that.

Oh wow you handled that professionally! Me on the other hand... 😂

You have got to be really entitled to feel like you have to bring up someone else’s personal business in a meeting because you want to know. Wow just wow.

Hernia repair is a valid excuse considering if they found a hernia during your surgery they would fix it during you procedure anyways

      Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

      Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
