Taste changes or food sensitivities after surgery

Recommended Posts

I’m so interested in this! I think it’s so bizarre but pretty cool! I’ve read tons of articles about possibilities of this happening, but I decided to come to the source and hear what changes have actually happened! Let’s hear any changes you’ve experienced after surgery! I’ve heard a lot of extra sensitive to sweets.. has anyone started to like seafood that didn’t before?

For me Water tasted sweet immediately after surgery. It was awful!

Also, whey Protein, which I could tolerate before surgery, I could no longer stand the smell of. It made me gag.

And I still, after nearly 9 months, cannot eat banana, Peanut Butter, cottage cheese or even Greek yogurt, all of these were pre- surgery friends but my Precious Pouch, the little ruler of my life , will not accept them. Maybe someday, maybe never, the jury is still out there. And Water, for me, has gone from being sweet-tasting to bitter, and I have not a clue why!

Green tea used to taste slightly bitter and astringent. Now it tastes sweet. I stopped coffee before surgery (I was a really big coffee drinker - LOVED my coffee!) But I tried it once after surgery and it made me sick. Can't stand it ever since, and I am thankful since I don't need the extra acid in my stomach. (Giving up Diet Coke was much harder, believe it or not.)

I would say everything tastes sweeter, since sugar is gone from my life now. A little fruit is more than enough sweetness. I started eating a few prunes each day to help with regularity, and those little guys taste like candy!

Oh, one more - liver! I really do want my Iron levels to stay up in normal range, so started eating a little liver several times a month. I got some really nicely packaged calf liver at Sprouts (Thin slices that are 4 ounces each) and individually sealed.) I can only eat 2 ounces at a time, but I cook that up with some onion and mushrooms - lightly coated in some gluten free flour and sauteed in olive oil. YUMMY! So easy to eat, as it is soft and goes down well. I am becoming a big liver fan!

So do dried apricots, who'd of thunk? Sure I lost a few old food friends but I gained so much more with my weight loss!💦No tears for them!

Peanut butter? My heart is so sad for you. It's a favorite of mine.

Sweet things are even sweeter to me. I do still use some Splenda Or stevia in my coffee - depending which I have handy- but even flavored yogurts were awful at first. As I get farther out I have been able to tolerate the taste a little more. Water some days tastes funny and I have to put something in it to help the taste. But that could be just being sick of water lol

cottage cheese still tastes like the best thing ever to me though. Pre surgery it was tolerable - now it’s the most amazing treat :)

and red peppers- they are the perfect food to me. Too bad they don’t have Protein but they are just the crispness and sweetness. So yeah there are definitely changes in tastes- textures too but that is a whole other conversation :)

I'm curious... did you all discover these changes gradually? I haven't noticed any real changes yet, but then I'm still on full fluids and have only tried a few things (oatmeal, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, refried Beans, pudding, and soup). meat and raw cabbage (where did that come from??) are the only things I'm craving.

I don't know that my tastes have changed so much, but I find myself not wanting "bad" food anymore like pizza, Pasta, cake, etc. That's a good thing!

Especially good if they once were your "slider" foods. Enjoy eating the "Good for You " Proteins and foods on this Memorial Day.

Mine didn't really change - although my sense of taste was more intense than before. What I mean is, it's not that I didn't like things that I liked before surgery and vice versa, but everything tasted more intense to me after surgery. Sweet things tasted sweeter; spicy things tasted spicier. At four years out, I don't notice it any more, though. Not sure if it's gone or I've just gotten used to it.

pizza was a great food-love and now it tastes different. It tastes really bland and doughy. And just not appealing. Ice-cream was my other great food-love. Now I can't even eat it. I have tried a bite and it is so gross I spit it out. I hate everything about it, the texture, the sweetness, the mouth-feel. It blows my mind.

I have also found that processed food or high fat content foods can really make me sick fast. I had a brat at a cook out the other night and I was sicker than I've ever been - all night. Same with even a bit of commercial potato salad. That happened at a Memorial Day picnic yesterday. I passed on all the other goodies - chips, nuts, dessert, baked Beans (too much sugar), beverages other than Water - and ate 2 bites of potato salad - here come the slimies, and urpies. Anyway - once you are off processed foods, it seems like your body gets so happy with the "clean" food that a major rebellion ensues if there is an assault with the processed stuff. Maybe it has to do with the new micobiome we have established in our guts since surgery. Lesson learned for me - don't even try the processed stuff. It doesn't taste like I remember and it never ends well.

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!

      Today was rough...
I've been experiencing a headache all day today that just won't go away. I'm thinking it's now progressing into a migraine. Does anyone else get headaches from taking vitamin B12? I did some research and learned that usually a lack of B12 causes headaches. But I've noticed when I take it, I have reoccurring headaches. 😫
