protein shakes make me puke

Recommended Posts

My surgery is July 8. I just started trying to drink a Protein Shake a day, just to help with the transition. The first day, I drank a full shake and subsequently threw it up. Today, I drank half a shake, felt like throwing up, but I didn't. I have tried Premier shakes (bananas and cream and caramel). Any suggestions on what to try? I'm getting nervous that all shakes will make me sick.

I like the Core Power Protein Shakes much better, they are not as cloyingly sweet and not as dense. You might try thinning your shake with Water or skim milk if it's the consistency that's bothering you. I also like to pour some in a container and freeze it for a bit. It's akin to ice milk and a bit more tolerable. Hang in there and experiment with other brands until you find something that works for you. Protein is essential and this is the easiest way to get it with the least expenditure of calories.

Sometimes, with no rhyme or reason, milk/dairy negatively affects me. I’m thinking of trying something lactose free. I’m ok with the consistency, it’s just about 30 minutes after, I have a horrible stomachache.

You may have to go to soy or plant Protein. And whey provokes reaction more than isolate.

I got an unflavored soy isolate, mixed it with Water and crystal light. It’s not wonderful, but my stomach can tolerate it. Only 20g of Protein per serving, but at least I can stomach it.

That's a shame. I've heard of other people not liking Protein Shakes on here in the forums. I like them. I use premade GNC Lean shakes (chocolate)

I don’t mind the taste, the whey just wrecks my stomach.

Your tastes buds will change after surgery. Nutrition is more important than taste. You won’t be reliant on shakes after real food stage. If you are throwing up call your Dr to see if it’s a medical issues

Whey makes me vomit. Try soy shakes. They have delicious chocolate and vanilla ones on Amazon.

Why not try the chocolate soy isolate? SO GOOOOOD. https://www.amazon.com/Sports-Protein-Isolate-Chocolate-2-Pound/dp/B001DNV53E/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=chocolate+soy+isolate&qid=1558541209&s=gateway&sr=8-3

I saw the post where you were denied the first time because you lost to much weight.  How much did you lose?  I lost 1 # my 2nd month and 6# my third month and scared to death I have screwed up.

      Thanks

I lost 11% of my body weight and they wanted me to fail to lose 10%. I even called the insurance company and asked them to clarify because the wording was confusing. I didn't know if they wanted me to lose the 10% or fail to lose the 10%. I was told to lose 10% so I did and apparently the person that I spoke to wasn't correct. But also this was in December and my company was scheduled to change to a different division of BCBS after the first of the year. So that probably played more into the denial than anything.

I continued my monthly visits and they clearly showed that I plateaued about month 5/6 and began to regain. I originally lost from 333 to 298 and regained back up to 330 but have now lost back down to 318.

One week post-revision, down 5 lbs since surgery day.....which puts me back under 300. VICTORY!!! Still a ways to go but I'll take every little win I can get. Feeling great other than minor abdominal discomfort.

      Breathe baby breathe
      Where does it go?
Some of the water produced as the body consumes fat exits in the usual way, through your urine and sweat. But a 2014 study in the British Medical Journal found that most of the byproducts of fat (including all that carbon dioxide) leaves the body through the respiratory system.
Yep, you read that right. You breathe out the byproducts of most of the fat that you burn, the CO2 from that process mingling with the CO2 produced by your lungs as they process oxygen. It's something to think about while you hit the gym or walk on a track: getting rid of fat can be exhausting, but it's as natural as breathing.
