I've spoken to many people who had complications with VSG GERD reflux and slow weight loss..

Curious if anybody wish they choose RNY but for some reason insurance won't cover?

Have a friend in that position!

Why are doctors pushing VSG?

Ugh. So really, I thought your question was genuine. I thought you were genuinely seeking feedback. But it turns out, because you already know everything -- you knew "the answer" to this question before you asked it. You were looking to set people up and receive some "bias confirmation." LOL.

*sigh* I sure hope everything goes textbook with your surgery and you have no complications...I fear if you have to contend with any, you will be one hot angry miserable mess.

Now whose being mean... Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Thank you.

Good lord. You can't even see that you set the whole forum up with the question and came across as someone who knows better than everyone else and that you were just waiting to trip them up and confirm your own position?

Well, ok then...moving on...

I actually had a failed bypass due to surgeon error. That was the worst mistake NOT making sure I had a surgeon who was right for me. Supposedly, the surgeon I had was top notch down here in Southern California, but he is an absolute quack!

Anyhow, my NEW surgeon opted me for VSG. I still wanted my bypass but thought of the benefits of VSG vs RNY. VSG has less Vitamin deficiency vs bypass patients. Yes, GERD CAN be a problem, but I haven't experienced any of that so far and I am 3 weeks post op. I feel great, less down time, and I would definitely do the VSG all over again vs RNY.

@LeaG

I'm in SoCal and am looking for a surgeon. Which Dr. did your bypass and which Dr. is doing the Sleeve? I want to know who to go to and how to avoid here.

We are all more than the statistics. I guess you can say I don’t fit the statistics/norm of a sleeve procedure. I lost fast. starting 254 to 140 in six months. I had no complications

My view only: I totally agree with the above and i did not do any research pre op - I saw the success my brother had and just went for the sleeve. I also lost fast and it was must for me.

However i have a hard time eating and staying with the intake of food, That is a common side effect to the sleeve, If i was to do it over i would most likely Research other options and the pro;s and cons of both.

This is a life long decision and it takes time to figure out your route - But i would have never lost the weight without the surgery and would have died very shortly so for me i can live with the little side effects that saved my life

No regrets here. I am almost 7 years out, and within 20 lbs of goal. I didn't want the lap band because I thought it would cause problems when I ride horses, and I didn't want the malabsorption/maldigestion of bypass (and the idea of loose parts hanging around in there creeped me out!) so I figured the sleeve was best for me.

I did have problems with reflux, especially at first, so I tend to stay away from spicy food, acidic food, or tomato-based food. Even then, still would get reflux at night when in bed. UNTIL I discovered the wedge! Started out on a wedge pillow, then because I roll around a lot, I put my whole mattress on a wedge. Then when my mattress needed replacing, I got a mattress with an adjustable base, so I can elevate my upper body as much as I want.

From the FIRST NIGHT with the wedge pillow, I have not had any reflux at night! It seems to have even helped with daytime reflux, although I'm not sure why. Just glad it's gone!

If you don't want to deal with wedges, try putting the legs at the head of your bed up on blocks.

Haven't had reflux/ GERD since my VSG. So glad I did the sleeve on so many levels. No regrets here.

I have never regretted the sleeve for a second. From pumping the pain meds, to changing my diet, to stalls. It’s all good. I would only get a revision if I got GERD, and no sign of it 14 months out.

And I thought putting down other people's choice of surgery was against the rules, no?

Well, someone found it and posted to it again, so there will be new replies. I don't know about you, but when I read a post, I don't take the time to look at all the dates on all the posts/replies. Especially when I am reading on my phone.

No regrets yet-

it has been a rough go, as I am only five days out. The Clear Liquids were killing me, and I had to try a Greek yogurt with Protein. Went down just fine. I don’t get how or why I’m still feeling hungry when so much of the belly is gone! Ugh

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
