hope I don't chicken out

Recommended Posts

I'm brand new here and new to the world of wls in general. I'm reading a lot of posts from other people here and everyone seems so young. I'm 50. For most of my adult life I've been overweight. Not "omg I can't believe the size of her" overweight. But, hovering around the 190 mark since my late 20s. In my early 20s I weighed 110 and I loved it. Everything about it. The shopping, the dating, the attention. But eventually I settled down and it seemed like one minute later I was up to 165. I wasn't ever able to lose it again. And my 30s and 40s were a battle to just stay under 200 I'm only 5'3" I also had the biggest boobs that were ever naturally created. 10 years ago I had them reduced. It changed my entire outlook. I had the confidence of my 20's again. I also lost some weight and felt amazing. Then I started getting diagnosed with all these ailments. High bp.… thyroid problems, I've been on Migraine meds forever.... My weight won't budge. Only low low carb or Jenny craig works. I can't afford Jenny indefinitely. And I stall at the 20 lb. mark. And I need some carbs...I end up eating to much meat because I'm hungry and I know I can eat it and not gain weight on the low, low carb. I can't do that anymore.

I think I could do it the right way with this surgery. I am up to 223lbs. I hate what I've turned into. And the fact that most of the time I've really been trying to lose. I know this is only a tool. It will help me to not be hungry all the time (HOPEFULLY) I will have support. I will have to learn to eat again. I think this is the only thing that will get me down to a reasonable weight and help me stay there. I mostly want to be healthy and feel good about me again. I have a couple of major worries. One is when people say you won't ever enjoy eating again. food will just be fuel. That makes me sad. I work in the music industry. So I go out a lot. I don't drink at all. I don't do any rec. drugs. getting a big Caesar salad w some croutons in it was my idea of partying. But everything in it's time. I just hope I don't chicken (Yes I like chicken in my Caesar Salad) out. Hope this wasn't too long!

Gabrielle1, these boards are great for advise, venting, saying what's on your mind etc. I've found answers to questions I've had by reading the different forums. There are many people here who've started their journey over 50 years old. Improving your health has no age limit. Welcome and good luck to you.

I just had the sleeve done 8 weeks ago and I'm 54 years old. It's never too late. And it's definitely a change of eating patterns and habits as you can only eat such a very small amount, about 2 oz at a time, but you eat about every 3 hours. I eat around 800 calories/day. Good luck with your decision.

Thanks Grady Cat and Deeber Lee. This site is amazing. My boyfriend is so supportive. But I know he doesn't get why this is so important NOW! And, I'm sure he gets tired of me talking about it all the time. He wouldn't say but he has to. He just wants me to be healthy. Especially emotionally. We live in Vegas. We used to be out all the time doing something fun or active. He's seen me go from that to hiding away because I look so icky.

My point being....lol...It's great to not be alone and know there are others. Thank you so much!!

I'm 15 days out from surgery. I understand you feeling scared, because honestly I am too. Im not so much worried about the surgery, but about the food aspect as well. But, like you I have many ailments and a cheeseburger or doughnut is no longer worth being fat. Oh, and I'm 53! So, it's ok to still start your journey at your age. I've seen people in their 60's or 70's. Good luck!

You sound like me! I thought I had wrote it. I'm going to be 6 yrs older than you on the 14th. and that's when I knew you could be a sister from another mother. I have no regrets so far. I wish I had done it years ago to really be enjoying it to the fullest now. Now it's not easy and you follow the rules closely because you loose the most weight in the beginning. We are all different here and hit things at different times. But we all get on the loosing bench and will be wearing our sexy dress out....even if it's just to the grocery store. Welcome!!!

Haha... that's so funny! Well, your welcome to the sister title. The one I have and I dont get along. I am gonna stick to every single thing they tell me to do. Especially in the beginning. I'll have to remind myself that I won't be on liquid food forever. IAll this waiting is horrible though. Thanks so much for commenting. This site is a lifesaver!

And it will come, my Silver Sisters, it will come! None of us are flashes, streaks of lightening in the sky, we are the solid women that truly rock the world. And we have the potential to be just as much a success as the young chickie- babies, and we have lived long enough to appreciate it all!

I'm nearing 50 (turning 47 this year), and I chickened out TWICE in the year and a half before I finally went through with it last fall. The "chickening" is probably one of my bigger regrets. It really served no purpose other than to allow me to gain another 15 lbs during that time, and to further delay getting to where needed to be.

Good Luck!

I'm 5 foot 2 inches, & just turned 50. My starting weight at my first doctor's appointment was 213 so I know where you're coming from! I have been waffling since the beginning. I'm worried something will go wrong and I will be one of those low percentages they talk about that have complications. Ugh!

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
