Scared of Manometry

I'm afraid to get my manometry done on Feb. 19th. And was wondering if any of you had any complications or was it easier than you thought it would be. You really don't have to sugar coat for me I can handle any graphic details. Be as honest as you can. I don't want to go in there and wake up in the middle of my egd like I did. I want to actually be prepared for this one.

I don't think you are put out for a manometry test.

They put a small tube down your nose and into your stomach. In most cases, they'll spray some numbing medication in the back of your throat (yuck by the way), but they need your help to get it down. They'll ask you to swallow as they pass it into the stomach.

The test itself measures how fast liquids pass through your esophagus into your stomach. So, they have you swallow Water. They need your cooperation in this, so I doubt they have you sedated in any way.

That's a relief. Thank you. At least I now know what to expect from someone who's been through it. With my EGD they told me they were going to sedate me then do the procedure but I ended up waking in the middle of the procedure with this huge tube down my throat retching uncontrollably. It hurt so bad I tried to rip it out until one of the nurses told me to breathe through my nose and I finally got myself together and calmed down. I just don't want to go in there expecting it's going to be a breeze then finding out otherwise. I'd rather be prepared for it this time.

It's not fun, I was sitting upright, didn't freak me out as bad as I thought. I had done it to lesser degree for my ENT doctor, and the numbing spray does help you not gag , it remember wondering how long that durn esopagus was anyway, I was swallowing in small increments, but I didn't reflexively cry as it was done, thought I might. To me the worst was when they removed the tube, because they pulled it out ka-swoosh, felt like a giant pencil being pulled out because at that point the numbing had ceased. To me the EGJ my endoscopist Dr Noria accidently left me awake for was a lot neater and less painful, I honestly think that tube is a thinner gauge. What happened to me was they gave me too little sedation , redheads routinely need more, I didn't go into twilight or complete sedation at all. If it had to happen, I would have been the perfect pstient, I have had cuts sutured without numbing , diverse seasonings why, this I would put on a discomfort,of maybe a 1 barely close to 2, the worst was when they removed the tube it was acswoosh and then a pop as it exited my mouth. I watched it all on the monitor with her, more clear and much better content than YouTube. And since then I gave been zonked out, upset them a lot more than ME, I actually enjoyed it, very informative, it says in the Bible we are " strange and wonderfully made" and I know now it,is the truth.

Thanks for helping me mentally prepare for this. If I know what to expect I think I'll do fine. And I think you're right about being a redhead and sedation. I have brownish red hair do to the Irish in me and I woke up in the middle of my colonoscopy too!

Yeppers, when I had mine I went ahead and requested to remain awake for just that. Disnt want to wake up in the middle and have a . panic attack. Do you have rosacea? They call it the Celtic Curse and I do have it, have it, Praise God no flares recently. Once when I was in the middle of an attack I was accused of being alcoholic because my nose was red and face flushed, no just my Irish blood coming out. My 2 sons names are Kevin(now an Angel) and Bryan , only more Irish would have named them Declan and Dermot, and late husband would not have gone for that. Rocked Kevin to "Kevin Barry" poor Bryan just got " The Rising of the Moon" both lovely Irish tunes. Did you get pinched on St Patrick's Day because you faied to wear Green? My daddy would pull that on me, got peeved , told him Da, your people were Northern Irish, did not gain me any amnesty, learned to at least put a green ribbon in my hair!

Yes I do have rosacea but it's not too bad. Just a little on my cheeks. I didn't get it until I was about 45 and really started gaining a lot of weight. I wonder if it will get better after I loose some of it? Fingers crossed.

I have had bad roseacea on my nose. 6 months worth of antibiotics and 2 bouts of laser treatment ( which hurts like a witch) and it seems to be improved

I might try the laser treatments after surgery and weight loss. Hopefully it’ll help with the wrinkles that are sure to come my way too :)

I’m going to have to research fillers and neck lifts, you can’t hide your face under clothes!

I know me too! The potato chip bag clip on the back of the neck to hold everything tight is gonna hurt after wearing it all day!

Potato chip clamp on the back of neck, kind of makes cringe insidem a Maybe you could also pull all your hair into Pebbles Flintstone upsweep. might pull all the skin up and tighter.Yeeouch!😱

It is always the same with me - I need more anaesthesia and more pain relief. It was a nurse who alerted me to the redhead thing when I was having my 1st c-section. I had to have 4 epidurals, and none of them worked!!

This is why I'm really irritated with my surgeon for refusing to prescribe any pain meds for me. Oh well, this too shall pass.

I am from Northern Ireland - it means I get to carry two passports, LOL.

Just got back from my manometry test. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be but it isn't something I would want to do again. I'm glad I did a lot of research on it and I appreciate all your input. That was the last of my tests and my final Drs. Apt. is on March 29th then it will be submitted to insurance 😊
