NOT FULL & always hungry

Recommended Posts

I’m 21. I had the sleeve in June 2017 and revised to the bypass January 21st 2018. Three days after being sent home I felt amazing. Not in much pain at all. But I’ve been constantly hungry. I had string cheese , Peanut Butter, yogurt and Protein Shakes. Nothing makes me feel full. I’m now on stage three and I made 1 scrambled egg with three crackers and was able to eat it all, drink some Water and not feel full. What’s wrong with me? I got full when I had the sleeve done and I was on stage 3. I feel like they didn’t do anything. Just went in and looked around then patched me up!!!

Most of those are sliders. And in my experience, it takes a while to feel the restriction from your RNY. I kinda "think" the nerves have to wake up. That's why it is really important to follow your plan and only eat the quantities it tells you to eat. Also, eating as low carb as possible will help with the hunger. Hang in there!

I cant answer for the RNY but with the sleeve, there is for sure restriction. And man when you overdo it. it is noticeable on my face lol. I dont even have to say i ate too fast or too much.. It shows.. I am learning each day to slow down and wait more and more because for sure for sure... Its a mess to deal with afterwards!

Edited to add: I'm a sleeve, not RNY, but for my doc the following would apply to any of his patients - RNY or sleeve.

Agree with fluffy that it may be the sliders. But you also mention drinking Water with your egg and crackers. My doc doesn't want us to drink water until at least 30 minutes after we eat because it can push food out of the stomach faster than it should. So, if you're drinking water with your food, maybe try that? Also, sometimes carbs (the crackers) can make you hungrier - at least they do for me. Maybe try egg with a bit of some sort of other Protein (breakfast meat/faux meat or something like that)?

Why did you need a revision so soon?

I just got mine, and i can tell you i have never felt full until i got this surgery. im still on my liquid diet, and i can only get down an 8oz shake before im like bursting. try eating more Protein. i was told not to drink Water 30 minutes before, during, and 30 minutes after eating or else it would stretch out the stomach.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
