When did you really start to see results?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. I am still pretty new to this. I am just a plethora of questions now a days haha. I am exactly 3 weeks and 2 days post op via gastric bypass. From my heaviest of 304 I am now down to 268 pounds. Yes it is nice but I still feel like I see no difference . Others tell me they see a huge difference. I know when it comes to ourselves it is hard to see a difference and we are always our own worst enemy. I know a handful of people who have had this surgery and they tell me 6 months out I will see a gigantic difference. How was it for all of you guys?
It probably took me about 6 months to personally notice. Looking back I know I missed all of the little changes. I will never forget calling my husband in tears because I was crossing my legs without even noticing! It seems so small but it was huge. I still keep some old clothes around for days I need a reminder of just how far I've come. Remember to enjoy the small victories like walking up a flight of stairs without pain. A year from now you will be a whole new person! You got this!

I’m almost 6 weeks post op, down 23 pounds and the only difference I see is in my face. Clothes still fit the same as well. It’s a tad discouraging but I am doing what I’m supposed to and I know in time I’ll see results. Haven’t been able to work out due to pain but that’s under control so I’m getting back to the gym today. Best of luck!

Hey darling congrats on your progress so far! I heard its a tad harder losing the weight when you have a pre existing health condition related to obesity. Hopefully thats not the case for you.

Well thanks, congrats on your weight loss as well 😁 I had and have zero health issues as far as hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipedmia, etc. just good ole’ aches and pains. I’m good with a slower rate, gives me time to work out and tone up. At my age I’m gonna have a good amount of loose skin. My neck is already starting to get the dreadful sag. That will be the first plastic surgery I have!

Just a few hours ago I was at my therapy session, it’s a crucial aspect for me in this journey to deal with my love of food and alcohol. Anywho, as we were talking I had my leg crossed without realizing it and when I noticed I told her, “well damn, look at that I haven’t been able to do this in years” it was a great moment 😁

I can see it in my face already at one month post-op and I'm already down a clothing size even though I'm only down 16 lbs on the scale.

For a while at the beginning of my weight loss journey . I was weighing myself everyday , 2-3 times a day. I was out of control! I've since gotten myself together and weigh myself once a week. I don't want the scale to be the only indicator of my weight loss. I've always exercised, so I see a huge difference in my clothing sizes. My body shape has changed for the better with the combination of weight loss and exercise.

Becoming an adult was one of the dumbest things I ever did but having RnY surgery was one of the smartest. And in the long run I believe the second will benefit me more!

Yes my nurse as well has told me to stop weighing myself! It will absolutely drive you crazy. My nurse told me I cant start working out really at the gym till like 6 weeks post op. So I cant wait! 38 pounds down. 140 more to go haha 🤗🤗

Well, I saw weight fly off from the start. However, when I really noticed huge results was about month 3-4. That is when my clothes started to literally fall off me, my wedding band would just slide off my finger and I could do seven flights of stairs without getting winded or feeling like my knees were about to explode.

Everyone around me and the scale had told me how much weight I had lost and what a huge difference there was but I still saw a fat man when I looked in the mirror. But that month when all that happened in rapid fire I was like “damn, I’m really starting to get results!!!”

Yeah me( waving for attention) & I think I do have grounds to.
4 months, probably stalled because of higher calorie count of.my TPN, woke up this AM to phone alarm going off, I don't even use it, must have been one of Tomkitten's bright ideas. He's still asleep, it didn't wake HIM up.
Upper right chest pain, high surface , over top of boob, now what could THAT be? Last time I drug me to the ER I was told it was atypical costochodritis but that was even left near the sternum and I got poo pooed, couldn't even have a cardiac event if I tried. Really this today feels more like a muscle pull. Not right area for my,ulcer pain, that is right subcostal classically.
Well I do have an appointment with surgeon Tuesday morning, if no better suppose I could mention it to him, he'll probably say " Not My Problem" and of course it isn't, but it's more a bother than something that will kill me.
But I am having a PLOM moment, stands for 0oor Little Old Me, but I'm sure once I see sunlight I'll get up and try facing this Monday Morn.
The surgery did stop the perilous weight gain, I'm not gaining any more, actually at a mid point, down more 100 pounds from High Weight but 75- 80 pounds to goal, still on token liquids and TPN for nutrition and to maintain my life and let my beleagured GI system heal. But Marching forward to Good Health?, nope, Don't Think So!

Hmmm to be honest, after six months, I still don’t see it when I look in the mirror. I guess, when you look every day, the changes don’t seem as drastic? Others notice quite a bit.

However, when did I feel a difference? When things that were tough to do prior to surgery got easier, which was super early on. Basic things, like reaching down and touching my toes or putting on socks or tying my shoes... or walking up a flight of stairs. I would say it was 1 month out before I noticed these huge benefits.

I still hold up clothing and think it’s too small, only to slide it on with ease. I still see myself as the same weight, even though I’m not.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
