I have seen several people mention gaining weight after 5yrs post-op. I too am starting to experience weight gain and no longer feel the restriction like I use to when I eat. Had anyone had the revision to help get back on track?

Many on here have and I'm sure you can too. You may have to fight a battle more than once to win the war. But it can be done, go and consult with your bariatric surgeon, he or she will help you search your options.

I wondered about this, but I see the results of going back to basics. Getting rid of breads and crackers and popcorn completely, and some restriction is back. Getting rid of seltzer has helped too. It's not perfect, but once I cut it out cold turkey, I craved carbs less with every passing day. If I drink enough, 2 oz. of chicken and a cup of broccoli is enough for lunch. Some days, it's just cottage cheese. Maybe you could visit your bariatric center and get some dietician support and see if it helps. Seeing some positive results and having someone to talk to may be enough. If not, s/he could support you through revision. Good luck! ;)

I'm 5 years post sleeve with an original loss of 100 pounds and a regain of 50 pounds. I'm getting resleeved on 4/3 due to the regain. Very excited, can't wait! My pouch stretched back out and I have little restriction now. I'm ready for my second chance at this sleeve thing :)

Thank you for letting me know this is an option. Is the cost about the same as the first time?

The only way to know is for your surgeon to order tests to see if you stretched it out. But again it won't fix your head, get that fixed first - start now to do that. We will always have bumps in the road, but you have to stay on the road forever, there is no getting off. Good luck.

4 years post VSG. Lost 230 pounds and have regained 120. I am going to Dr Jalil Illan at Bariatricpal MX on June 15 for a revision to the Mini Gastric Bypass. I have a very sedentary job and I think (HOPE) that this will help me start losing again and be able to maintain it much easier. We'll see. You can read my full story in my profile if interested.

Many options. Work with a nutritionist or get a life coach be your own cheerleader. I know the talk - a bit of bread or cake of... cause I am normal now right? Well no I am me and this body runs slow. for me it is logging every day and counting ounces of Water. I do not always get it right but more times than not I am around 1100 calories with 60 g plus protien because that is where I do not gain. Life long for me

Get it diagnosed if your surgery is stretched. I am hearing it can be from the procedure performed wrong, complications or overeating. If it’s overeating, get counseling so you don’t stretch a second surgery. (I'm hoping @JamesL73 is opening a revision thread. I would like to understand more about this topic)

I'm five years out. My situation may be different than yours. I had weight gain in my third year and worked it back off. Did your Dr's let you know that you would feel less restriction as you progress out from sleeve surgery? This is a common experience. Mine is not back to full size but it is larger. Just because I have extra stomach compacity does not mean I have to eat over my weight loss/maintenance calories/macros.

Some things that help me satisfy the extra room:

  • I eat dense Protein and foods allowed on my plan. I eat as much veggies until the sensation of full. (ditch shakes, bars and soft foods. They won’t keep you full years out)
  • I eat five to six small meals. It helps to keep my blood sugars level. I log to make sure I’m staying within my calories/macros
  • Keep healthy sweet and salty options on hand to satisfy cravings.
  • Once you add extra carbs and sugar you crave them more and they cause hunger. Detox off them. know you will feel crappy for a while. It will pass.
  • The main killer of weight loss is grazing. Eating several small meals healthy and unhealthy options that total over your daily calories and macros. When you eat small meals, you don’t feel any surgery restriction. The sensation as if you never had surgery. You will gain weight.

I too am struggling with regain. I lost 100 pounds in my first 8 months (about 2/3rds of what I needed), and then slowly started adding more (let's face it, carbs) to my diet and since then I've gained back 30. It's very frustrating for me and I've been debating getting a revision myself. But I refuse to do it without making a real attempt to get back on track, which started today! (Hopefully it works, this is not the first time I've tried to do it).

It's also my return to this site in a long time - it's been so long that the last time I was here I couldn't be considered a veteran, and now I am!

I had the Sleeve done in 2013 I lost 90 pounds now almost gained it all back. I’m going back to my surgeon to see if I have any options. I feel as if my stomach stretched out. I’m also suffering from GERD. I have Aetna PPO II plan does anyone know the process they put you through for a revision approval?

I agree with this totally. Many of us have experienced regain and lost the regain by getting our heads right again. It's easy to fall off track after some time and almost forget that you are a WLS patient, but that should always be part of who you are! The only true way to know if there's stretch is to have an EGD or a barium swallow. Most bariatric surgeons will tell you that a sleeve can't truly stretch because of the basic muscle type involved. I went back to my NUT, went back to the psychiatrist, went full on Keto and lost my regain. For ME, It was really about getting out of my own head, finding what I know works, and getting back to work.

I suppose I should clarify my weight gain is less than 10 lbs (fluctuation). I just don't feel the restriction I once felt. Now I still measure food and exercise. So I've not necessarily fell off the wagon. I just want to ensure my pouch is not stretched out or developed a enlargement at the fundus, in order to hear of weight gain in the future.

Not unusual at all! Most of us feel a lot less restriction around the 1 year mark. That's because ALL of the inflammation related to the surgery is finally gone and your sleeve is not impeded by any extra Fluid, etc. I wouldn't be overly concerned about 10 lbs, but it might be worthwhile to just log your food, increase your Water, etc. If you look at most of the opinions of surgeons, it is normal for almost all bariatric patients to lose dramatically during the 'loss' phase then rebound a bit to the 'healthy weight' spot where they settle in.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
