February 2019 weight loss buds

Recommended Posts

Quick post before Pilates class then I’ll go back later today and read back through the last couple days.

Wanted to post 5 month progress pics.
My cat kept trying to photobomb so I was trying my best not to laugh, but despite the weird look on my face, here is this months version

Snacking is the only thing keeping me alive!! I feel dehydrated and malnourished lately. I’ve been working hard today to get Vitamins, Protein and Water. I dry heaved like mad after the Vitamins, but I kept them down. I can barely eat most days, Then, randomly, I will eat like eight chicken nuggets in a period of two hours. It is the most random unpredictable thing ever! I snack to live!!

I’m a bit more consistent, but I know what you mean.
Some days, I struggle to choke down a boiled egg by noon and I know those are they days when my Protein intake is going to suffer. Those days I’m hard pressed to take in 500 calories.
Then I have days when I’m actually hungry (not head hunger) by 10am and I find myself eating 3-4 times in a day. My sleeve is able to hold more (without feeling overstretched) and I know I’m going to rock the protein and get in all the nutrients I need.
So I know I’m not actually stretching my sleeve because I’ll go back to days where it feels like I can’t hold much of anything without pain.

It’s a mystery to me and I haven’t found the root cause. If there even is one. 🤷‍♀️

I recently noticed something. I commute to work on the Washington, DC Metro. When I was big, people generally wouldn't sit next to me unless there were not other options (kind of like being picked last in gym class). Now I'm one of the first to have someone join me. That's progress, although I always enjoyed having the seat to myself.

I’m going to be flying solo for the first time post-surgery this coming Friday.
I’m looking forward to not stressing about how much I’m going to spill out over into the next seat. That’s the thing about carrying a majority of weight in hips/thighs... cant suck those in and take up less space.
Fingers crossed this time I will actually be able to see the edges of the seat on either side of my thighs.

I totally understand. I have to fly in August. I will not need to carry me seatbelt extender but unfortunately, I will still over into another seat! So hoping they have some cheap upgrades available. I can’t till I can fly without that concern!

I can’t wait to hear about the flight and congrats!

Are you trying to sabotage yourself Anna?

Frou Frou... maybe??? I wouldn’t say sabotage. I weighed 113.4 pounds this morning. I am thinner than I’ve ever been and it is freaking me out. I am trying to increase calories to slow the weight loss. Now that I’m closing in on 100 pounds it is starting to really unnerve me. I spent today going through my closet and setting up a box of donation items. My “goal” jeans from three years ago (size 9) are now in that box - they were hanging off of me when I tried them on today. This is a huge adjustment I didn’t expect to go through. I was majorly craving sweets when I did the shopping trip but since then I had one small bowl of ice cream. Done and done. Doesn’t really even sound that good. I have had three salads and one bowl of ice cream from that shopping trip. Go figure. Wait... what the hell am I complaining about?!? I guess the better question is why am I not embracing this?

I wrote a Facebook post about exactly the same thing a few weeks ago! Can't be bothered retyping so here's a screenshot...

I've had my mum staying with me for 6 weeks and I noticed that I was gradually eating more than I normally do. Not a lot, but enough to make a difference to my weight loss. My mum actually ate more than me and lost 2 lbs. I haven't lost anything for a while now, so it's back to basics - measuring and weighing everything. It's amazing what a head thing this is... I have just had half a cup of food, and in my head I am still hungry, though my stomach is saying otherwise! Crazy - it's a constant struggle.

I'm feeling very similar. At 5 months out my appetite has returned and I'm able to eat quite a bit more than before. I find myself grabbing salty Snacks way too often. For some reason I crave Chex Mix and salt & vinegar chips the most, as well as cheese and pimento dip with tortillas. I'm still able to stay away from sweets, but the salty snacks keep calling my name. I have been up a pound, then down a pound, then up again for about 3 weeks now. I am definitely able to eat more than a month ago--a lot more. I guess the pouch has healed but I hope I'm not stretching it. I was able to eat 5 pieces of mozzerella cheese rolled in proscuitto ham today. 5 pieces! A month ago I'd have been full with 1 or 2 pieces. I am terrified that my emotional eating is returning as I find myself wanting to just snack away at work. 😱

I know how you two ladies are feeling! It's such a struggle, even with weight loss surgery! Definitely able to eat more myself. 😱

I definitely am trying to reach for fruit and vegetables with the extra room. I've done fairly well at staying away from sweets. Thank goodness we have each other to understand how it is and to encourage each other. I have 90 more pounds to lose and it is overwhelming to say the least! Good luck to everyone!

I find that I am also able to eat more now, and I haven't experienced any discomfort from eating in several weeks. It's nice to feel "normal" again, but I do wonder whether this mans the honeymoon phase is ending. I am still sticking to the diet, but eating a bit more of everything. I've discovered packages of "protein bites" in cheddar cheese, pizza and Cookies and cream flavors. Each pack contains 90 calories and 13 g of Protein. Those have become my snacks.

I am going through the same thing. I can eat a meal and then just want more. The head hunger is getting hard to fight. I am snacking way too much. Although my food choices are fine, it is still feeling a bit out of control and that scares me. I've stalled for the past 2 weeks, which is no surprise. My exercise is fine, but my eating is not. My plan is to get back to tracking every bite and maybe even cut back to the extreme - like 400 cal/day (similar to what I was eating the week after surgery) and up it by 100 every week. If I lose 2 pounds per week, I should be a goal by the time I am back up to 1,000 cal/day. I don't want my metabolism to drop into starvation/survival mode, so I am hoping the exercise will prevent that. I am so close to goal, but these last 20 pounds are proving to be the hardest.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
