I am happy to say that today, 8.8.19, is my 1 year Surgiversary‼️‼️‼️ I have lost 85 lbs, but more importantly I have gotten off NINE medications 🎉🎉🎉 I am happier, by far healthier, and for the first time in my life truly LIVING my Best Life‼️ best decision I have ever made ❤️
Congratulations!! What a victory. That's a year of hard work but if you hadn't have done it, you'd still be a year older but in nowhere near as good shape. We'll done.

I have an ongoing allergy to posting photos online so its unlikely I can post proof of vacation boo’s visit, but he’ll be here for two weeks living in my apartment with me. There are mini vacations planned as well. He’s volunteered to cook (he knows that I rarely do, since solo meals are so tiny post-surgery that hours of prep aren’t worth it), he’s entertaining himself while I’m at work (touristy stuff I exhausted eons ago), and will probably do a few days or remote work himself.

I’ve had a really intense few months at work that have only just let up, so it’ll be really nice to have him round to hang out with. But honestly it’s also just going to be massively NC-17 pretty much all the time, and I am VERY much looking forward to that.

@GreenTealael what’s up with your long-distance guy? Still going?

Oooooohhhhh vacation boois becoming teal life boo 😍

Unfortunately my situation is in an odd place. Now that he's physically gone, its kind of an out of sight out of mind thing, previously we were spending A LOT of time together.

We do speak on the phone every few days (i hate personal phone calls) but text everyday. But.. I'm ok with him being away, I totally appreciate the space but I think a long distance relationship will eventually bore me 😳

Any tips? Any one?

Honestly, if I ever had any expectation of vacation boo becoming a more solid thing, the whole damn thing would be different. But since geography and circumstances and frankly life philosophies make that practically impossible, I have a very low bar for this entire relationship. We text daily too, but I don’t hold him to any of the standards I would hold an actual boyfriend (communication wise). And when we’re together it’s good, so - live in the now! And be totally aware that if a guy comes along who is more practical, he gets the spot!

But right now? This works. My clock’s not ticking and he is VERY good at MANY things, so status quo is maintainable. If I get bored I’m out, which I think is a reasonable stance when there are a lot of other asterisks in the relationship.

In other news I’ve been holding steady for the last 5 months, which is fine but also has me a little concerned. I might drink too much iced coffee with cream, among other things. Steady is fine, regain is not. Every time I see this guy I lose 10 lbs, crossing my fingers that witchcraft works again...

Ummyasmin I started doing Pilates and love it. I go to Club Pilates because I have found that using the Reformer table gives me the best workout and I love the fact the class sizes are small and they can give you a substitution move.

I also started going to club Pilates.
I’m addicted to it and try to do at least 5-6 classes weekly.
Tonite was back-to-back with suspend followed by cardio 1.5.

Thx. I live in rural Ireland so my class options are limited 😥 I was wondering specifically about swimming workouts coz we do have a gym with a pool (which I just joined).

I'm about the start the next step.....PLASTICS!

I'm scheduled for consultations starting next week.

Question for anyone else contemplating plastics

What do you think of consultation fees?

On one hand, I recognize that a surgeons time is valuable. But on the other hand I will be out some serious money, before I even decide on a surgeon.

I've narrowed down my search to 5 surgeons who either specialize in, or do a fair amount of post bariatric plastics. Three of the five charge consultation fees, from $150 - $350. Interestingly my top 2 choices don't charge a consultation fee.

I'm thinking of just seeing my top 2 first, and then scheduling the ones with fees if I'm not comfortable with one of those. But I also don't want to save a few hundred dollars (total $750 for all 3 others), if at the end I might be more satisfied, or save thousands on the final surgery.

Opinions please!

I would go with the 2 that don’t charge first. If you’re totally satisfied no need to go further.

If you have any doubts, pick your next choice that does charge, but unless all 3 turn out to be duds I don’t see the need to go beyond that

I am approaching one year. I’ve lost about 90 pounds from highest. I exercise every day. I drink Protein Shakes and mainly eat turkey chili. I still have problems eating certain food. But I am so much happier.

I had a lot of thoughts about this when you posted in, namely that the doctors who charge are shysters, so I did some reading. There are very valid reasons to charge. One is that you won't feel pressured to get work done since you have paid them for their time. Now I think it's pretty neutral. There are good reasons to charge and not to charge. I learned a lot from this article.

Thanks @JessLess (article isn't linking though :( )

I'm not opposed to consultation fees, I'm just opposed to $750 worth 😳

My first consultation scheduled for Thursday, that is the highest fee at $350. I'm thinking I might cancel that.

On Friday I have my consultations with my #1 & #2 choices, which neither has a fee. Interestingly they are both more renowned for their work, than the others, but don't charge. I would think it would be the opposite.

I'm a little stressed with both those appts on Friday, 50 miles apart in LA traffic 😖

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
