How much/what have you had? (protein) and are you hungry?

I've had coffee, a cheese stick, two ham and swiss wraps (literally, ham and swiss rolled up), Crystal Lite, four pieces of tuna sushi and a piece of egg sushi. Oh, and about a half cup of milk and a small cookie. I've just put a frozen cannelloni in the oven and will likely be able to eat half of it, and then the clock strikes eight and I turn into a pumpkin.

I'm hungry enough to eat some of that cannelloni though not starving, and a little apprehensive about when the munchies inevitably strike at 10pm. Honestly this is mostly a sort of "what if I thought I wasn't hungry but actually am and oh my god food" mental thing.

Okay, ate the baked Pasta and rounded things off by madly grabbing at a couple of cashews and then a shard of almond brittle (dimensions: about a dollar coin) and now I’m DONE. DONE.

(This is so stupid, I eat like this all the time but now that I’m paying attention it’s like I’m getting cast out on an ice floe and need to stock up to survive.)

Ah crap, meant to post this in IF instead of here. Whoops. Well, if you don’t hear from me again know I starved to death in 16 hours, which I’m sure sets some sort of record.

 ... I definitely know this feeling.

This is me at an airport. Must. find. food. before boarding my flight, even if I'm not hungry. Because god forbid in the next 2 - 5 hrs I might get hungry, and that would be the end of the world.

Honestly once you start doing IF, it will become easier. You'll realize for the most part hunger passes quickly. Just drink Water, or crystal light or whatever, and occupy yourself. If it gets too bad, break your fast, not the end of the world.

(This is coming from someone who will still sometimes give into the "what if you get hungry" voice and has eaten far too much crappy airport food, just because)

We are the same person. We can never meet, or we will cause some sort of vortex.

i’m actually a fan of those self-service marts in the airports now. I find that I make much healthier selections, for some reason - no more desperation donuts. I get those little yogurt drinks instead of peanut M&Ms. Of course I also overpurchase and that’s why there’s a carton of cucumber-flavored airport Water in my fridge right now (it cost $4, I am NOT throwing it out, even if I have to carry it through the entire damn airport and home).

I am also now a fan of Alaska air’s little cheese plate things. I used to view it as a measly pittance, but today one of those things fuels me cross-country.

 .... Funny, when you wrote this “in five years, I want to be typing on my couch in a home I own in the middle of a weekday because my job has that sort of flexibility” , I thought hey that's me, just add with unwashed hair, in leggings and fuzzy socks! (Well technically I only own my bathroom and maybe laundry room!)

Yes to the overpurchases, I have Jerky and cheese sticks that I have toted across the country and are now in my home, as well as less wise choices like Combos and Famous Amos Cookies. Because you know, I couldn't just leave them on the plane or throw them away, nooooo

I have a low tolerance to repeating the same food, so I can no longer do the fruit and cheese plates, I ate those for years, (along with Pringles of course). The upside is I haven't eaten a Biscoff cookie for many many years, after gorging myself when I first starting flying regularly. :P

Alright, well I guess I now need to account for the effects on my weight the paradox of @sillykitty and @sideeye's planes ever being on the same trajectory will undoubtedly have...

And I guess the pint of Halo Top on December 30th.

Update: I think this intermittent fasting thing is not so bad. I'm not HUNGRY, I just want to eat something, so it's sort of the same sensation as week 2 or 3 post-op. I also worked on a coffee with cream all morning during meetings, which is probably not necessary but baby steps.

Of course, I also think that I did not pack correctly for eating at work and at noon all I have to devour is a cheese stick, a Protein Shake, and a yogurt. So I may eat absolutely everything on my way home (which luckily is around 3pm).

I've decided I own my bedroom. If the floor was made of lava I could step from the front door into my bedroom, and I also love my bed. And while I usually look like a refugee from an off-off-Broadway Flashdance revival at home, since moving into the new place I have to up my game (because my kitchen window is huge and everyone across the courtyard can see each other) and I've bought a flowy green Natori robe to swan around in. Let's see how long that lasts.

I wish I liked Halo Top. For some reason any substitution I try to make like that bombs for me - it's like all I taste are the changed ingredients. So instead of a pint of Halo Top I do a quarter-cup of full-bore ice cream.

Y'all if @sillykitty and @sideeye ever meet, we are all gaining 1.8lbs of fat, the migration pattern of Caribou will shift 2 miles South by South East and there will be tiny hors d'oeuvre plates where they once existed...

And there we have it people. I can't afford to gain 1.8lbs right now! :D

That does it, @sideeye and I definitely can never meet, can't mess with the caribou migration. I imagine they're having a tough enough time of it already :P

Ironically, leggings and fuzzy socks is upping my game. When I moved to my new neighborhood a couple years back it is much more social. The UPS guy chats. People walk dogs and will sometimes ask questions about my house or yard. Neighbors drop by randomly. I've legit had one ask to borrow some milk. So now my unwashed hair is always tied up, because dirty messy Buns are better than it being down and greasy, in my mind at least. My shirt, leggings and fuzzy socks may not match, but at least don't clash horribly. And most importantly, I now always wear a sports bra!

I just googled Natori robes. Now I need one, or maybe two. That way when I walk around post cardio I can hide the wobbly bits and look sexy af doing it!

Full disclosure: I happened to find one of those robes on crazy-deep discount o Amazon and when I went back to get my sister one the next week the cost rocketed. So keep an eye out for sales but it definitely makes me feel like a 1940s movie star.

I have an entire weekend stretching out with, for the first time in MONTHS, nothing to do. I may try to conscript a friend to go to a Korean spa with me, which I’ve partly avoided in the past due to nudity (though for some reason never bothers me in Iceland?). I want ALL the skin scrubbed off of me until I’m red like a lobster.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
