2 week liquid diet. how will I survive!

Recommended Posts

Ok so I'm on my third day of a Dr ordered 2 week pre-op liquid diet. I WILL NOT cave in - I don't want to do anything to screw up my chances of having surgery! This is carved in stone for me. I am so nauseous and tired today, and what I feel like doing is curling up in the fetal position laying in bed and hibernating until surgery date. Does it get easier? Any tips on making this a less torturous experience? 😧

The first days are the worst. It does get better. Can you add in some variety? If you can, try different types of Protein Shakes (I like Unjury, premier, and Syntrax nectar), some different flavors of teas, some millie's sipping broth for something savory. When I was on my liquid diet, I tried not to have the same flavor twice in any given day - it really helped me. You can do this!

I started my pre-op diet today! I blend my Protein with ice so that it has a thicker consistency, kind of like a milkshake. It makes it seem more like a treat :)

Thank you. I blended my shake this afternoon with ice and added some extract flavorings that I had purchased when I last shopped. I grabbed like 5 different flavors and just a generic vanilla high protein/low carb powder for blending. I'm trying to do this as cheap as possible. I bought some sf Jello and I'm waiting for that to be ready. I'm thinking of getting some sf Popsicle's (clear ones) next time I shop, for that urge to chew. I don't know yet how much these things will help, but the shake was nice today. I feel less nauseous this afternoon. I appreciate the help and encouragement.

The first few days were awful. I felt tired all the time. But I think day 5 was when it turned itself around. I get those Oikos triple zero greek yogurts in a lot of different flavors for one meal and then I Protein Shake for the other two. I supplement hunger between meals with either a bullion cube of beef or chicken (in hot Water of course) and that really kept me going. Plus my doctor allows sugar free Popsicle so I would have that or a sugar free Jello at night before bed. This is a little hard for the post-op liquid diet but it really helped me pre-op

My 2 week liquid diet I was only allowed to have a specific brands of shakes that I had to buy through my pharmacy. Other than those I was allowed sf Jello and broth. I couldn't have yogurt or anything like that. I made it through without cheating once. Most of the shakes were sweet and I am more of a savory person so my saving grace was a trick I learned in a bariatric fb group. Yellow mustard. They said it helped cut cravings and it really did! I put some on a spoon and basically had a little taste at a time if I was craving normal food. I started using this probably at the beginning of week 2 and it got me through :)

So yes, I was tired the first few days on this Clear All liquid diet. TIRED and cranky. My surgery is Jan. 2. I still have the transition headache weaning off of the diet cokes...although tonight seems to be tapering off. The biggest thing is the 'clean out' I experienced over the last 5 days that always seems to happen when I'm on Protein Drinks - I've been drinking the chocolate Premier ones. I definitely don't need an enema...ha!

I ate a few diluted creamy Soups REALLY hot and strained. My diet allowed one portion of plain soupy grits (or Cereal - oatmeal or cream of wheat) in the morning - that helped to keep me full and the Oiko's zero yogurt. I also got a few of the Light Yoplait yogurts as well to switch things up. I got a variety of flavors Gatorade Zeros and Powerade Zeros. And I allowed myself a sugar free pudding or sugar free Jello to mix things up as well.

I just bought the sugar-free popsicles. This will pretty much be the diet after the surgery minus the grits for a few weeks so i better get used to it now.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
