I Was Amazed When I Heard This

There is nothing wrong with steak as your Protein. By my 5/6 week I had tried a steak grant you only 1 or 2 oz of it and still only up to 3 oz now. Get full fast. When I go out I think of what I want for dinner and lunch/breakfast the next day. Doggie bag heaven. The golden rule is you never deprive yourself always have a taste and the craving should go away. It does help me. I was craving something salty so I licked a potato chip I was only 3 weeks out and could not have solids, but it helped me. We our all at different stages and our bodies will tell us what stage we are in.

Like you, I haven't had any issues tolerating anything, although I haven't tried steak or pork yet. Any chicken/seafood/turkey etc goes down really easily. I can only eat about 3oz of Protein at a time before I get full (lump in throat, burp, or sneeze are my signs).

My surgeon said not to worry, it's GOOD that we can tolerate stuff without issues, we just gotta stay on plan. (I still do the chewables, I HATE big pills lol)

I eat all kind of meats and I didn’t have any issues with any kind of meat. I am having beef jerkies for Snacks and I tried steak once.
On the other hand I cannot eat legumes they give me almost instant pain, I cannot eat Pasta and eggs although I eat them from time to time I feel so full even after 4-5 hours of having them (1or 2 maximum)
So everyone is completely different !

CyndieRI I don’t like seafood or turkey either!! I have never liked it and probably never will!! My go to foods are lean roast (very Tender) and chicken breast!!

I was sleeved on 11/6 and have been able to tolerate all meat. So far I have tried chicken, pork chop, steak, ribs, turkey, ham and baked fish. In small portions of course. As a matter of fact I haven't found anything that doesn't agree with me yet. That actually scares me a little bit though.

I eat steak every week - a bit cut off the end of my partner's. It's great for Iron, great for Protein, great for taste - what's not to love? As with anything, it's only a problem if you have too much!

I am almost 5 weeks post opp and I have been told be my sugeon and nutritionist no starchy carbs at all for at least 3 months preferably never.I just had smokey bones baby back ribs last night and it was tender(4oz).I at scrambled and fried eggs, meat balls,turkey in gravy,deli turkey,egg salad, baked fish,garlic shrip,scalaps.I think when i try steak it will be a 6 oz rib eye and get 2 meals from it.

I've dieted for a large portion of my life, and what's always happened before is that I'm really strict, then I'll allow myself to have a little something on special occasions, then I get completely derailed and can't get back on track. Well, this time is different. I don't count anything as getting off track really. This is a lifestyle change; it's not a diet. I choose to primarily eat healthy, but every now and then, I eat things that aren't necessarily good for me. This is how I plan to keep this going for the long term.

My feeling is that steak could possibly go down but how do you test that? I’m so paranoid about food getting stuck that I’m going to be afraid to try everything. I can’t imagine eating something like steak so soon because I would just be so afraid of having it sit in my pouch aching

i can barely tolerate chicken.. and now it seems ham too.. It is such a struggle that i dont think it is worth it

I don't know how far out each of you are, but we all heal and tolerate foods at different levels after surgery. Some food aversions might remain forever, most do not. At 14 months I can only tolerate bites of very small very tender beef, and forget chicken breast. I eat thighs, pork steak, turkey/turkey burgers, fish, shrimp. Lettuce is still dicey, only a little bit, not often and unless bread is chewy italian or toasted not happening - it balls up. I do not eat Pasta - a waste of space.

I think we are sooo quick to judge people's choices and then we don't learn from each other, beware of becoming a different type of food cop.....all you freshmen.... And seriously we ALL have mental issues with food and everyone has to figure out what works and what works specifically. In the beginning we can all only eat a very limited amount of food, so eating anything at this point results in weight loss - so it feels like winning. It is not a game, but there are some rules and penalties and you are the authors, directors, your own coach. Therapy is always good.

I'm a bariatric baby, but I love this comment. No one becomes morbidly obese and qualifies for weight loss surgery unless they have a problem with food except for the rare person with a medical issue that can only be solved with severe calorie restriction (I have PCOS and depression but I know that is responsible for only part of my weight gain, not all or even most of it). It bugs me to see how quickly people forget their pre-surgery life and become judgemental. There are people on this thread questioning this man's mental health because he ate a small amount of Protein. He didn't eat an entire cake or a gallon of ice cream.

True, true words. I went from food excesses to food repugnance, right now NOTHING sounds good, few things taste good, tried some still-GOOD-for - you foods recently, 2 teaspoons and I pushed it away. Part might be the fact that my TPN does fulfill my caloric needs, but I also promised I would try to eat by mouth once a day, and it is so hard. Maybe some shake, and I am tired so tired of them, maybe a little Soup liquid or broth, don't suggest cottage cheese, or similar, anything with texture, up she comes, even if I try pureeing down vegetarian vegetable soup to an absolute liquid, Precious Pouch refuses, and after she is empty I continue dry heaving. Done it so much I have pinpoint hemmorages on my upper chest. You might think them age spots or freckles, nope, petechiae. So Carafate for my ulcers, Zofran for my nausea, miss one dose or don't get it on time, even what Water I have recently drank comes back up, but dang it I am going to get better And then I will be amazing too!

If the gentleman can tolerate steak - no matter where he is in his post-op progress - good for him! That's HIS choice, and we shouldn't judge him on what he feels is right for him. I have no food restrictions, but I decided early on to wait until the three month mark to have steak again. Whether it's right or wrong, that's what I have decided to do, and it's really not up to anyone else (aside from my bariatric doc) to judge me on it. Everyone is unique in their journey, so one size really doesn't fit all.

      So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

        It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

      I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

        I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

      How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

        Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

        I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

        I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

        I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

      Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again. 
      I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent. 
      I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

      Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
      For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
      For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
      Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
      Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
      It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
