I Was Amazed When I Heard This

Recommended Posts

Last week I was attending a group session when one of the group members said that he went to a steak house to Celebrate his birthday and he ate a steak. He had gastric sleeve surgery in early November. He said the steak was so tender that he could eat it without a problem. The other group members looked at each other puzzled. How could this guy eat a steak less than two month post op from a gastric sleeve? I was sleeved close to a year and a half ago and I still can't tolerate steak. Pre op I would scarf down a 32oz porterhouse with no problem and then order dessert.

He then said that we shouldn't be ashamed to ask for a doggie bag as he went to a restaurant a few weeks ago and couldn't finish his order of roast beef and took the uneaten portion home. One group member asked him WHY is he eating this stuff and HOW can he eat it. He said that it was his birthday with the steak and he doesn't want to be deprived. He said if he deprives himself he's only going to want it more. It goes to show you, WLS takes care of the stomach not the mind.

SO ITS chicken AND TURKEY FOR US LOL

I also eat fish and shrimp...Can you tolerate seafood? These last few days chicken has not been going well with me, I'll lay off of it for a few days.

I ate a bite of very rare, very lean steak at around 4-5 weeks? *blush* Sue me...

And by about 8 weeks out I was eating anything and everything. But it was only small amounts and very rare, tender and chewed to kingdom come.

This is where you simply can't compare cuz we're all different. My doc had released me to eat anything, btw. :D

I kind of agree with the gentleman at your meeting. Now, I will say, I don't know how he's able to tolerate all that meat so early, but I agree with him about depriving himself. I also allow myself to have certain things that other people who have had this surgery wouldn't dare have. I eat chocolate daily. It's something that I really enjoy. Now, I don't overindulge in it, but I do have a bit every day, and I make sure to track it.

I've dieted for a large portion of my life, and what's always happened before is that I'm really strict, then I'll allow myself to have a little something on special occasions, then I get completely derailed and can't get back on track. Well, this time is different. I don't count anything as getting off track really. This is a lifestyle change; it's not a diet. I choose to primarily eat healthy, but every now and then, I eat things that aren't necessarily good for me. This is how I plan to keep this going for the long term.

I’m 10 weeks out and had a few bites of sirloin this week and it was very tender and went down fine. Most times I have trouble with chicken. Every one is different! (Unfortunately I don’t like seafood since that seems to be the one thing almost everyone can eat!)

I don’t think I could tolerate it that soon, but steak is not an unhealthy food, it has tons of Protein and if he is getting a doggie bag, he seems to be following the plan, no? He’s not taking down a buffet or eating even eating a piece of cake, just a piece of protein in a small portion. I think the “how” is a reasonable question, but not the “why”.

I have no problem with steak as a Protein choice. He didn't eat the whole portion and doggie bags are cost effective for bariatric patients.

Support groups can get a bit crazy. My top local support group things not to do.

A person a week out from surgery ate doritos and ended up in the ER.

Bariatric surgeons potluck. We were asked to bring bariatric friendly foods/recipes to share. Someone made a Sugar Free Chocolate cake with real sugar frosting.

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
