Sliders and triggers

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I am new here. I had my surgery November 8th 2017, had a wonderful surgeon and great staff, I love my post op weight, still have about 16 lbs to go for my personal goal weight. I ran across some one talking about sliders and triggers mentioning that crackers popcorn are trigger foods. What exactly are they and how do they affect us as sleevers? I must admit I absolutely love rosemary crackers and have eaten them with some cheese and grapes for an actual meal. Anyone out there can comment on this for me?

This person is just referring to foods that you can eat a lot of because they do not cause any discomfort. The sleeve is a restriction tool that (for awhile at least) prevents us from overeating because we start to feel uncomfortable if we have eaten too much. If a food is a "slider" it "slides" right through our sleeve and we feel no restriction. "Triggers" are just foods that you cannot seem to help yourself around.

Well done and concise.

Will they slow your weight lost if they “slide right thru?” Trigger foods do they make you want more of them and are they bad for you? I have a fellow sleeper that eat popcorn all day long, someone at our job sells huge bags of it, all flavors and she is gaining weight. I eat crackers and I do notice that I don’t lose when I am having my fill of them. I do exercise quite often so ignore might be balancing what I eat but I will stop , well...almost cold turkey if it’s not good for me.

Your observations seemed to have answered your questions...

Try to stick to the foods that were on your plan to kick start weightloss again. But most people cannot eat their fill of anything they want after surgery. That is what usually caused the initial weight gain

Yes, sliders can stall your weight loss. Weight loss is all about calories in versus calories out, so if you are eating more calories than you are burning, you're not going to lose weight. Obviously if a food is a slider, you're eating more of it and that results in more calories taken in.
If you cannot control yourself around a certain food(a "trigger") it means you have an unhealthy relationship with that food item so in short, yes it's bad for you.

Your friend is gaining weight because she is self sabotaging/working around her sleeve by eating popcorn all day.

And...popcorn is corn...a crap vegetable that's bad carb heavy...if she's stuffing nothing but corn in her mouth all day, well, yeah...she's going to gain.

Yep. Also most popcorn is full of salt, butter and a ton of other stuff that increases calories and decreases how healthy it is

I know that I am super carb sensitive. I also had a week where I wanted crackers with my cheese and ate them. I had to get them out of the house. I could eat far too many and not feel anything. I know that for me, I need to stay away from refined carbs to keep the weight loss going. I could easily sabotage myself if I'm not careful

Slider foods are foods that turn to mush or liquid in your mouth:-

Crackers

chips

popcorn

candy

chocolate

Cake

Highly processed foods etc

They are high calorie, easy to overeat and have no effect on your hunger levels.

Non sliders are foods that are still relatively solid when they get to your stomach

meat, fish,chicken,vegetables

They are full of nutrients and fill you up.

Wow!! Thank you for the responses. I didn’t know that. I will watch the Rosemary crackers from now on. I do exercise but to make me feel good. I spin for a two hour class on Saturday and sometime I try to catch it thru the week of I get off work early enough. You guys are great!! It’s nice to have some folks that know what I’m going through. Only my immediate family know I am sleeved, so I don’t want to post a public picture, I don’t want to have the conversations with my coworkers who are asking me all kinds of questions. It’s coming off slowly but it hasn’t returned so I guess slow is good. But wow!! Crackers huh? Hmmm, my favorite with some spicy cheese, cut up cold seedless grapes and I had a meal. Well now that I know that I’m going to really tighten up so I can get these last 16 lbs off. I wish there was a place that sleepers csn meet and hang out with each other. That would e gear! By the way I’m in Michigan.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
