In my surgeon consult yesterday he told me that once I have surgery, I must avoid NSAIDS at any and all costs because the potential to cause ulcers. Pardon the pun, but this was a tough pill to swallow LOL What in the world do you do when you have a headache or period cramps? Tylenol has always been 100% ineffective for me especially with period cramps. Headaches are rare for me, but cramps...those are a definite once a month occurrence and they show no mercy except when I toss back about 4 Advil

You will need to have an alternative solution.

If possible, birth control of a hormonal type is most useful when it comes to difficult periods. I would work this out now, before your surgery.

I have horrible cramps, and only ibuprofen would help mine as well. I did not plan for this ahead of time and it’s been a struggle.

Theres a huge list of meds my surgeon gave me I’m never supposed to take. I was aware of a few of them, but some of them were surprising.

Yikes...well, I have a copper IUD for birth control because I can't take BCP's. I'm estrogen sensitive or some crap. Every inch of my face, chest and back break out in tiny pimples, no matter the type of pill. This is definitely something that will come up in my next visit.

Hmmmm, I can honestly say I haven't taken aspirin in a very very long time. Not sure if it'll work with cramps, but I can test it out in the next few days! So aspirin is OK with bypass?

EDIT: Welp, here's a list of NSAIDs...aspirin is #1 on the list :( https://www.medicinenet.com/nonsteroidal_antiinflammatory_drugs/article.htm

Aspirin is an NSAID so is contraindicated after gastric bypass. Do not take it as it may cause ulcers.

They do have IUD that contain progestin, if you already have an IUD maybe this is an option?

Copper IUD can make cramps worse in women that already have bad cramps.

You hope something like Norco will touch it, I am an RnY who also has Tramadol in reserve. Does not work for every body but does for me. Have majority of the bottle. still left, haven't had that major pain, otherwise hot Water bottles, heating pads and rage against life's injustices.
My original ulcer was from NSAIDS. I have reconstructed what happened in my mind. See I also have a slight % of COPD, often have mucus down in my lungs. To handle that my Primary Doctor prescribed a demulcent, helped lungs clear up and out but also destroyed the protective mucus layer in my stomach.Okay, bad enough but also I have been arthritic since 25, bad enough both knees have been replaced, while I was dragging around 365 pounds of blobby blobby flesh, I was having LOT OF PAIN. Didn't consider all the ramifications, so PCP said 4 Advil each 4 hours for pain flares. Down go the Advil, there sits my largely naked stomach and Chomp Chomp like Pac-Man the NSAID starts taking chemical Chomps until I had Gastritis and Hector my original ulcer. I was on Omeprazole(Prilosec) but it still happened. Now I am happy to say I weigh over a 100 pounds less, and that was only Autumn of 2017. My gastroenterologist had put me on Dexilent, kept things quiet,Hector went back to sleep. Then Bariatric Surgery happened. Apparently among their post-surgery protocols is omeprazole administration, oh I did protest, tried telling them it is not gastroprotective for ME. Did they listen? Of course not, said I had to take it anyway, why not take 2 doses,if something doesn't work, why take twice as much? At my 2 week post-surgical follow up, I stated There is SOMETHING WRONG! And once again my complaint got ignored. But I kept whining each and every chance I got. Finally( and my guess was to shut ME up) an endoscopy was scheduled at 1 month, 5 days, October 12th 2018 and guess who was right? ME ME ME. Score Frustr8 Ulcers 5 Medical staff 0. A stomal stricture, 2 ulcers within the pouch, 3 on the back wall of the jejunem, all angry-looking threatening critters, would rather bleed than heal. More endoscopies on October 26, November 9 and November 28. And ulcers show signs of healing, stricture No plan to resolve without continual interventions by Dr Noria. She is my Surgeon, Dr Needleman's partner and uber-smart herself and she. ❤doing endoscopies, you might say it's her " bang zone" along with Bariatric and General surgery. And actually I believe that I can be fixed yet.

My surgeon gave me Foriset. I think that is how it is spelled. I took tylenol when I was younger and my body does not respond to it. My surgeon says it has tylenol, narcotic, caffeine. Gave me it to try prior to surgery

I worried about this, due to long-term hip pain that NSAIDs dealt with well.

But since surgery, weight loss, gym strength training - I have needed painkillers only twice all YEAR (previously that was a typical week!) both for headaches. I used codeine and it worked fine.

I have been amazed by my medication decreases...

My surgeon allowed my to use topical NSAIDs for joint pain following RNY. So far no issues encountered.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
