Any gastric sleeve patients with Fibromyalgia

Recommended Posts

I am looking for some input from people who have fibromyalgia and have had a gastric sleeve surgery. I am having my surgery on 12/20/18. I have pretty bad fibromyalgia and my surgeon told me I may have a rougher time than most people. I am scared to death that I will have complications or be in so much pain. I have had a hysterectomy and a back surgery and did very well with both of those from a pain and recovery standpoint but I was a lot younger then.

I had my procedure back in 2/17 and also suffer with Fibro. I don't recall having any issues related to it. In fact, now that I've lost weight, I've noticed a reduction in my symptoms. I understand your concern and you should listen to your surgeon, but in my experience, I believe you'll be ok. Best of luck to you.

Had RNY September 5th, hadn't thought about it until you mentioned it, but I am currently Flare-free. May I continue to be so!

Hi. I have fibromyalgia and am always fighting pain & fatigue. Not easy but my surgery went really well. I was expecting a lot of surgical pain and/or fibromyalgia pain and the surgical pain was less than expected. That first night home (went home in less than 24 hours), I had a lot of pain in my shoulder and back.

I keep accidentally posting before I’m finished - sorry. I think it would have been helpful to have something a little stronger those first two days 100 pounds in almost 11 months. You have been through significant surgeries in the past. It’s likely that you’ll find this easier than your previous surgeries. (I had a c-section in the past and was prepared for that level of pain and it didn’t reach that point at all.). You can get through this and once you’re on the other side of this, you may find that it was easier than expected (as I did). I wish that for you. Please feel free to message me anytime.

I'm right there with@KatFight. I was prepared for a horrible amount of pain, but had very little, as it relates to the surgery (because of the fibromyalgia). I was fortunate as I "only had the gas pain". I walked around the hospital all night the first night and it helped. I also used the pain pump the first night...probably more than I needed because I thought the pain would be unbearable. Best of luck to you!

Thank you KatFight. You have been very encouraging. I think positive thinking also really helps. With my other surgeries, I went into thinking that I would do really well and I was up and walking much quicker than some of the other people on my hospital floor who had the same surgery. I really appreciate your feedback from everyone on this topic.

Since my retirement 2 years ago, my fibro has been fairly stable, with sleep problems the major issue that I've been having (which of course leads to fatigue and muscle tension). I'm having surgery tomorrow and I'm hoping for the best. I haven't been on fibro meds other than muscle relaxer at bedtime for about 18 mo, so not sure how I'll do with pain. I will be following this to see if I can get pointers in dealing with it.

I have fibromyalgia and having my sleeve done on Wednesday the 28th of November. This is a concern for me as well, but the surgeon said perhaps the flares will decrease as I lose weight. I'm will to hope!

My PCP said much the same thing. We were discussing whether I should go back on fibro meds, given that ones I had been on before caused a lot of my weight gain. I am waiting to see how I do without them. I am counting on the weight loss to help.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
