Pre Op quitting smoking cannabis

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am Pre Op surgery my date is 12/5/18 (so close i know).

we all have our habits, and knocking out lots of habits at once is so hard as we all know. I've been a full time cannabis user for the pass 10 years, smoke ganja everyday. Anyhoo, I've recently stopped smoking. I know i can stay strong at this point not to smoke but I'm very concerned I didn't stop sooner now. is two weeks enough time to give yourself before going under? If i tell my doctor he will postpone my surgery. I've worked so hard to get where i am, that would be very discouraging.

Please need advice from SOMEONE who has gone through this would be greatly appreciated.

(I know we all have our opinions but this is the route I choose since my boyfriend clarify me i will be okay over and over again but now doing my research I'm freaking out)

You will be fine as long as they don’t test you for marijuana in your pre-op testing. Two weeks is not long enough for it to be out of your system enough to pass a drug test if you are a daily smoker.

you will be fine! i stopped smoking a few days before surgery (i was smoking every day for like 2 years at that point) and i was fine. all you have to do is make sure you tell your anesthesiologist the last time you smoked in case they need to adjust your meds or anything. my dr didn’t test for marijuana pre op, just tobacco and nicotine so you should be fine if you’ve stayed away from blunts/spliffs. best of luck!!! and don’t worry!!

Why are you stopping? Curious the reasoning and justification. There are plenty of folks that use medically that have reported positive outcomes with use to speed and aid in healing post WLS.

I'm on Dronabinol for sleep... it's FDA Approved THC pills that I get at CVS. Zero issues, even with taking them the night before surgery.

Yeah, I stopped roughly 2-3 weeks before surgery. I used to be a daily user years ago, but now I've got a kid and I'm a weekend user. Today I'm 12 days post op and I smoked weed again for the first time since I ran out of my pain killers a few days ago. I was only using the pain meds once or twice a day. I'm feeling fine, and it is definitely a help with what bit of soreness I was experiencing before. You should be totally fine to continue use post surgery. I don't know that I'd still do daily since I imagine it can still increase odds for an ulcer. Although even a daily smoker of pot isn't taking in nearly the amount of smoke per day a cigarette smoker does.

My doctors are sticklers, that's why. If i wasn't scared of the whole anesthesia and THC, the things I kept reading. i would still be tokin it up. But i want to just be on somewhat of the safe side. When I started my research I couldn't find any positive. This relieves me. :D I'll still be strong because its been a few days now, and Its going well.

Understood, there is SO much scare tactic information flying around though. But, I agree, best to be safe. Post op however... all those anti-inflammatory and expedited healing properties are very VERY beneficial.

SWIM used dry herb and vape as soon as 1 week post op. They reported no issues with hunger control, increased pain reduction w/o meds, increased healing times, reductions in swelling, and improved sleep quality and overall they report it made post-op more tolerable. Only downside is controlling the cough, it was reported that pressing into the main incision point with the palm made coughing less problematic. It was reported that use also seemed to assist in gas pain reduction as well.

Congrats on your surgery! Good luck and here's to a smooth and speedy recovery!

totally understand. i was already drugged up, with my mom there talking to the anesthesiologist and i go “so i’m supposed to tell you the last time i smoked weed right” and they all just laughed and were like uhh ya i guess? i think it mostly matters if you smoked like THAT day so you should be fine

I'm in califorina and I'm an everyday user. My anesthesiologist just asked me not to smoke the day before or the day of surgery.

My stomach cannot tolerate pain killers I just throw them up. I can now sleep so comfy. And I'm pain free. So no worries.

Im scheduled for surgery on the 10th of December. I have been smoking cigarettes for years. The Doctor told me to stop about 4 weeks ago. Initially it went well but now i started again. I dont smoke a lot but i am scared that they will test for nicotine or that i will have major complications. Is there anyone that can give me more information on this or that went through a similar experience?

Jessica, I was a frequent weed smoker, too. Having marijuana in your system can affect how you respond to anesthesia.

I stopped smoking probably 6 months before I got scheduled for a new job, but I told my program coordinator and the psychologist. They sent me for a test, and it came back clear. It delayed my scheduling meeting by a week.

ALWAYS be honest and transparent with your healthcare providers.

I thought they were full of crap when they said it could interact with anesthesia. I did some research of my own and found that they weren't lying.

At the very least, do a couple of home urine tests to ensure its out of your system before surgery.

Good luck!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!

      Today was rough...
I've been experiencing a headache all day today that just won't go away. I'm thinking it's now progressing into a migraine. Does anyone else get headaches from taking vitamin B12? I did some research and learned that usually a lack of B12 causes headaches. But I've noticed when I take it, I have reoccurring headaches. 😫
