Hi there, I have battled with my weight my whole life, however am now 25 kgs overweight for my height of 163. I am blaming it on the fact that I have had 4 shoulder operations in the last 3 years, but realistically it is because I have been binge eating (definitely not purging) and been very sedentary (compared to my old lifestyle). I have tried every diet known to man since I was about 13 and have on occasion been too skinny, but now I can't budge this weight and I am considering getting a vertical gastric sleeve. My weight has affected everything in my life, mentally and socially. My BMI is 31 and whilst I had a relatively high BMI of 27 when I was an athlete, I know that this BMI is purely fat. Has anyone had a vertical gastric sleeve with a similar BMI? I would really appreciate any opinions. Also, I am considering getting it done overseas (I live in Australia and won't be covered by insurance). Thanks very much.

Do some research on surgeons overseas. Find what criteria you need to meet for surgery approval. Lower BMI with comorbidities may qualify.

Thank you Skinny Life. You have done amazingly with your procedure. Were you able to get back to work relatively quickly?

Hey OllyC, I have a BMI of 32 and I am getting a revision on December 17, 2018 - band to sleeve. Your post sounds just like me throughout my life. Athletic, on occasion skinny for me, mostly fit with some excess weight, but now feel very chubby!! I'm getting revision done in Mexico!!

Thanks so much for your reply CM3540. Let me know how you go. I do feel a bit worried because it's not reversible and like any operation there are risks (which is crazy because I worked in operating theatres for many years...I just don't like being the patient. I definitely would love to hear how you go.

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
