8-days Post-Op. Craving textures and spices. Afraid this is a sign of future failure.

Recommended Posts

I was Sleeved on 10/29. Been trying each day to get in all my Protein and liquids but I have fallen a bit short each day. A;so struggling to get my Vitamins in. I am still not feeling hungry but yesterday I just started growing really tired of the same texture of "food". I am a fast food girl, have been since I could get my own money and get to the drive thru. I miss the crunch, the spice, the different textures, the ability to choose something different everyday/every meal. The food commercials are really getting to me and I'm starting to think, "I can't wait until I can have that". I'm afraid that this means failure is right around the corner. I'm starting to regret that I ever did this. I could really use some encouragement and maybe some suggestions on how to work through it. Thanks.

Oh no! Don’t be discouraged!! I’m not too far ahead of you (sleeved on 10/10) but the first 2 weeks are definitely the hardest!! When TV commercials come on for food, I hit mute and look away (or change the channel when my husband isn’t home - lol). It’s easier to just not look!! I know I was craving spicy food so once I was cleared for scrambled eggs, I made some and put some hot sauce on! Yummm! It definitely hit the spot!! I’m sure some more veteran sleevers can help more than I can - but that’s what helped me. And also, I’m REALLY sick of being so overweight! I need to do this for my health! Good luck!!

You’ll be shocked how little you can actually eat if any of those
Foods ever! Just stick with your program and hang on! Results will help motivate you and you can do it! It is not easy though some veterans on here will be militant and act like everyone’s a failure but them. Concentrate on staying alive and moving around. Read: drink Water and move. This short time so soon after surgery will seem like a tiny speck on the timeline of your new life. I’m only 8 weeks out tomorrow and I’m still in the blip of Time phase and it is already easier. Keep going!

Desiring things is normal. And you WILL have them back at some point in the near future. Just stick to what you need to do now, to lay the foundation for later. Do not fall into the whole "I'm failing because I still want XYZ". Trust me, I had moments post-op when my kids were cooking pizza or even just making toast and I'd be in the living room with an oz of some pureed blah almost in tears because of how bad I wanted to eat pizza and toast again. It sucks. Just keep in mind all the reasons why you wanted the surgery and understand that, down the road, you WILL be able to have a lot of things you can't right now. Just stay strong! The journey is rough and has plenty of seemingly impassable moments... but it is doable and so very much worth it!

Hang in there. Those commercials always get me too. It gets so much easier as time goes by. You will be able to eat more things as you heal...stay the course and be strong!

Hang in there girl! It's not a sign of failure. It's a sign of life. :) You're totes human! :)

It's a sign of being on a liquid diet for 2-4 weeks or more! Nothing else. By the time it was time for me to move to mushies stage, I swore I could sacrifice small animals and rodents just to have a taste of real live food with texture. I was having obscene sex dreams about poached fish and soft scrambled eggs. LOL. Swearsies.

Look at this as an endurance test with wicked feats of strength required and a right of passage.

Welcome to the other side. In 6 months, you will be so glad you held firm and followed your doc's plan for you.

Ok so I was sleeved on 10/29 too! And I have the same issues too! I actually ended up going to whole foods and getting several different kinds of Soups and thats what has been helping. Just having the different flavors is such a relief. I can't tell ya much more than that about it, but its what got me thru that day (had a 5 pound weight loss the next day and that helped as well) and I am exactly as new to all this as you. Matt Z always has really good stuff to say to people here so I am gonna follow him as soon as I get done responding to you lol, so listen to him and people like him... they have been through it and are awesome enough to be here to help us with their insight and hindsight. Be kind to you, this **** is sooooo hard. I go to my doc tomorrow and should be moved to pureed, so there is some hope for a lil bit of texture, I am trying to hang in there.

Big Hugs!!! You got this, you are here, reaching out, you got this!

I had surgery on the 1st and still have all the same cravings. The only thing stopping me is knowing I will feel horrific if I ate it. Monday I was scheming every possible way it would be *ok* to have a single bite of Taco Bell. But I have already experienced dumping from some cream of chicken Soup so let me tell you... that is not something I want again. I just went to puree today... I am a huge texture person. I can't wait to move onto the crunch. I guess the thing is... I am still hungry. I am still craving. But now I will literally get violently ill if I cave, so I won't. That's the tool for me. Deterrence by punishment. lol.

I'm also only getting 15g to 20g of Protein a day, and my surgeon said that is normal and he doesn't expect me to get to my levels for weeks. So I'm not stressing.

My surgeon doesnt let us go on to puree for 10 to 14 days... however i have pushed that a little bit with a few super soft veggies in the warm soups... they dissolve so its not lumpy just a lil thicker. It is def easier still to just have the broth, but i dont think 2 smushed carrots stirred in that liquid is really any problem.

Oh, I remember that liquid phase...it was hard. I was using Premier Protein shakes and after drinking them for a while they were so sweet I could hardly get them down. I ended up cutting them with skim milk and adding banana extract, almond extract, raspberry extract...anything to change the taste. Even now, I crave texture and spice. Red pepper flakes are my friend, as is Tabasco sauce, salsa, garlic/chili paste, and A1 sauce. I put croutons on stuff just for the crunch. Soon you can have all of them. Be patient.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
