How much Protein were you hitting right after post-op?

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I just wanted to ask as I'm just 12 days post-op but I am struggling with getting my Protein in. I would hit just about 15-20 grams and my doctor wanted me to hit 50 a day.

How many grams of protein did you hit when you were at this stage?

I'm still at the full liquids stage and I'm having a hard time with my Protein Shakes and protein Water as I just can't get them down.

Am I doomed? :(

First few days my protein intake was around 50ish, it helps if you use some of the clear Protein Drinks as they are much easier to get down. Check out Protein2o and Isopure Zero Carb RTD. Both have around 20 grams of protein and are as thin as Water.

Thanks, Matt. I'd be ecstatic if I hit 50 grams in a day.

I tried the Protein20 waters and I found them too sweet but I guess if I Water them down it might work.

Crossing my fingers!

They might taste sweet, but they have 0 sugar. Anything at this point is going to help!

Hahahaha! I do think diluting them makes them go down easy, but I never had issues drinking anything liquid. Also if you hate prepared drinks, maybe consider making your own. You don't even have to use Protein Powder. You can use things like yogurt, cottage cheese, Fairlife FF milk. It will all add up. Add Peanut Butter powder, spinach, blueberries, avocado for creaminess--even walnuts and things. Then blend the crap out of it until it's TOTALLY smooth and homogenous. You thin it down with Fairlife FF milk until it's a drinkable comfortable consistency for your new anatomy. Then you control how sweet it is. I use liquid stevia and mine are way less sweet.

One of my faves was Bananas and Cream (Isopure powder) mixed with decaff coffee blended with a bit of ice for a Cocomo Joe Frapp. I also loved Premier Protein Bananas and Cream shaken with decaff and served over ice. Really cut the sweetness and was liquid like iced coffee. But some do not tolerate the whey Concentrate from Premier.

Thank you! These are great ideas- I'll definitely try to experiment with my own Protein Shakes just to have variety. I don't know why I didn't think of making my own. I wish I could have coffee but I never was fond of the taste but I am willing to try them just so I can have something different :)

You can use Decaf tea too. Just make sure your flavor combo works! I do like blueberry tea with vanilla Isopure and blueberries and spinach, or other Celestial Seasonings flavors. You just have to be sure everything is very well blended so you don't inadvertently get seeds that might still irritate you.

I really liked peach tea blended with frozen peaches, yogurt, spinach, avo, etc. lol. or Premier peaches and cream shaken with green decaff or peach tea over ice is phenomenal!

You're welcome! I forgot to mention, if you don't have lactose intolerance probs, the Premier Protein Clear (Peach Mango) is great mixed with iced tea!!! So dang good!

Oooh- I just might try that. Been craving for something on the fresh side rather than milky :)

Also, what's your take on egg drop Soup at the full liquids stage? Just looking for some ways to add more Protein to my Soups as well :)

I got 60g. I drank 2 Premier shakes throughout the day. I had to add Water to them, as they were too thick. I now drink the Isopure Zero Carb; it's thinner and easier to get down than the Premier shakes are.

My RD told me I could blend up egg into Soup so that it was homogenous. It's easy to do. Put the eggs in a drink blender and pour hot soup into it as it whizzes like you're making hollandaise and adding hot butter. Then it doesn't really curdle.

Ooh this is a great tip- I'll try this for dinner. Thanks again for all the tips, I really appreciate it :)

60g looks like an unreachable goal for me right now but I'll definitely try to amp it up. I can only do 1 Protein Shake a day as it takes me a few hours to get through one and it somehow gets me full the rest of the day leaving little to no space for other things.

Been hearing about the Isopure Zero carb too. It seems to have the best reviews for Protein waters so I'll try to get some of those.

Thank you :)

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
