Southern Sleevers

Anyone from the South or living in the South? How has your journey been so far and where are you at in your journey?

I am from Nashville, Tennessee and lived there most of my life. I live in Ashland City now and I"ve been here almost 4 years. I had my sleeve done in Nashville at Centennial on April 3rd of this year. So far, I have lost 45 pounds at my last appointment at the end of September. From my home scale, I have lost a total of 54 pounds.

Good morning, I'm from Georgia and I had my sleeve done October 17th. So far I'm doing good, trying to get rid of a rash and starting to actually sip more Water than before.
Congratulations on your surgery[emoji255]

Congrats starting yours. I love Georgia. That was where my Daddy was from. I've always wanted to live there. I stay getting rashes, but I thought it was just me.

Hi, I am 11 days post op. I’m from Gallatin, TN, but now I live in Atlanta. I was sleeved 10/29/18. I’ve only lost 11 pounds and I’ve been having all kinds of thoughts running through my head. I just hope that I have as much success as all of the stories I’ve read on this site. I guess I just need to trust the process. Good luck on your journey!

Sorry for the late response..I had foot surgery. But I had an allergic reaction and broke out...thankfully I'm healed, just waiting for my skin to clear.[emoji255]

A Georgia🍑 peach with a rash? That's not good at all, but at least we didn't have to spray you for fruit Tree Scab or a bug infestation!🍑

Good morning! I'm from Texas!
Had my sleeve done July 23rd .
Congrats on the 54lbs. My start weight was 238....pre surgery was 221 and I am 172 now. Still struggle with wanting certain foods. I don't eat but a bite or two of what ever it is but I'd like to not do that at all. Mental side is still challenging for me. How are you doing with the diet part(mental side)

I'm fluctuating from 176-185. These last few months I've really given into my temptation and I'll do good for a week then cheat really bad for a few days. The holidays has always been rough for me and I've hung on to eating for comfort and it's mentally hard not to do what I've always done. I tell myself I'm only going to have a few bites of something or a nibble and the next thing I know I'm eating a whole bag of chips or a bowl of ice cream, etc. I know that these are slider foods and I have an abundance of healthy "snacks" like string cheese, carrots, celery, cottage cheese, but I crave crunch that is salty. Then I get so mad at myself and feel like a failure.

Curious Yankee asking a quick question: do Southern sleevers feel like you have a more challenging time controlling food because of social and cultural pressures? This may be stereotypical, but I always got the feeling that southern life is more socially oriented around food than it is up north (life events, community events, religious organizations) and that the traditional foods tend to be less healthy. Also that people are more comfortable asking you personal questions, where northerners tend to put up a privacy wall. I mean, I can turn down an invite and no one blinks, or I can not eat at an event, and people are VERY unlikely to ask personal questions without me inviting them, but I know that’s not true everywhere.

I could be totally wrong here, but I did wonder. Or do you feel like it’s basically the same experience wherever you live?

I'm bored and raised in Tennessee with redneck family members that are all from the South. To us, going North is Kentucky. I'm not ignorant, but we're Southerners at heart. I think that is a good question because my life has always revolved around food. As a kid (I've even noticed I've done this with my kids) we're rewarded with food. When people came to our house, you were just fed. If you didn't eat what was offered it was considered rude. Cleaning your plate was a must to show respect. I know as I've gotten older (I'm 36) it makes me happy to see people devour my food I've cooked or to praise me with how it tastes. Food was used as comfort. If I was sick, eating would cure it all (except a tummy bug). Us Southerners have "comfort foods" that are fried in lard, bacon grease, or oils and you had your sweets like homemade pies, Cookies and cakes. Carbs was/is a staple. Every meal had biscuits or cornbread (not the sweet kind). I actually just finished making biscuits for my husband that I freeze for his Breakfast. We are all up in peoples business. When something happens in a persons family, it's nothing to take casseroles, cakes, breads, etc.

I have struggled so much to lose weight. I'm 9 months post op and I've been stalled for 2-3 months. Winter is hard for me because of deaths and birthdays and I've used food for comfort my whole life except when I was on drugs.

I can't speak for all Southerners, but this is my own personal experience.

Did you know females in the South have their own special acronym. They are G.R.I.T.S., girls raised in the South, although I am Buckeye born and bred, but so many family members from Deep South, bless your ❤ I have to have to have an associate membership. We don't say relatives, we say "Who are Your People", honey that means" who are you related to?"
Do come on in, sit a spell, I'll rustle somethin' up we can eat! You feelin' okay?

Ok I had surgery on Jan 27 2020 so I am 3 weeks out and have lost 32 lbs  I wish I had this done sooner. Now just trying to figure out different things to eat so I am not eating the same thing over and over. I did order some stuff today from the Bariatric Store and that stuff should be here in time for my next phase. I have a goal of 50 lbs by the first of June hope that is attainable. Good luck to every one on this journey

So went to my surgeon today for one month follow-up. Last time I was there he wanted me to put on 4kgs but oops I’ve lost another 2kgs. Told him it was intended, was trying to maintain, upped my food intake, was stable for almost 3 weeks but last weekend broke it.
Mum turned 80. Drinks at neighbours, a couple of crackers & dip, home late, no dinner. Out all morning, followed by celebratory family lunch, home late, no dinner. Whole dietary routine out the window. Did have a protein bar & tuna frittata muffin in between but didn’t eat much at all those two days.
What dumbfounded me was he was ok with it. I told him I didn’t want to put on his 4kg because of the weight gain many experience in the 12+months in maintenance. He agreed with me. What the??? Invasion of the body snatchers??? Totally opposite position from last month.
He was also ok with my stopping my multivitamins. Agreed with my thinking that is better to feel ok & eat then be nauseated & not eat. He’ll just monitor my bloods to ensure no problems which is what they do anyway.
      Not complaining.
