When I went for my surgery, I wish I brought/had......?

Hey everyone! I’m new here and getting my surgery date Wednesday. For those that have gone thru the surgery already, what are some things that you wish you would have brought to the hospital? Thanks in advance!

I took wore my comfy PJs and slippers to the hospital and that's how I also came home. I did miss my favorite blanket tho (yes I have a whooby. Lol)

I took my soft stuffed Rabbit, Roux N Rabbit, she was soft to clutch when I coughed or sneezed. I didn't need any jammie, soft pants, or anything like that, I seemed to be on room arrest, thought I had my entire C Pap packed , turned out to be missing an important piece,of tubing, the respiration had nothing to match,so I was on O2 my entire stay. Oh they came in when I rand to use bedside commode because they also wouldn't take me to BR or watch me while I walked. But I must have been on similar to ICU where you are monitored from central location. Saw no other patients, heard no other patients so certainly didn't speak to others. Thought I would, took new notebook to get addresses and e-mails, it's still blank.Except for bringing me in fruity and milky drinks, I got no diet. Basically My Son did my care, kept me company and slept in a bedside chair. Never got to sit in it until last day when I took on myself to try it out. Everywhere else I had ever been , staff had me up in chair within an hour or two of returning to my room. Maybe they felt they were keeping me from being a fall risk but I felt I WAS CHEATED!

I took a comfy pair of slippers to walk around in, so I would not have to wear those stupid looking uncomfortable no-slip socks they give you. I also took a comfy pair of Jammies suitable to be seen walking the hospital halls in of course. Bring Shampoo I forgot to, they do want you to get up and shower the next day. I did pack a new toothbrush and toothpaste. Pack whatever you think you might need. Better to have it and not need it.

All the best to you!!!!

Most people bring way too much, use the search feature to look for "what to bring" posts, there are quite a few lists folks have posted with what they brought, what was useful, what wasn't, etc.

I was glad I brought:
Heating pad
Phone and charger
Chapstick
Extension cord for heating pad and phone charger.
Slippers
That’s it!

I wish I had taken my own fruit punch flavored Crystal Lite. They only had lemonade flavor. Otherwise, I didn’t need anything I took except my hairbrush. They provided everything I needed...even a phone charger.

I agree with Matt, most people bring too much, I did. Lots of great posts on here about this topic.

I was glad I brought my own pillow.

As for bringing any of your own small appliances with extension cords, I advise against this. This is not allowed in the hospital I work at and may be a hassle for you if you try to bring something.

Cell phone and charger was all I needed. Wouldn’t plan to bring any clothes that touch your waist. Those were pretty uncomfortable for about 2 weeks. I went home the next day and showered at home so didn’t need any toiletries. Hospital had toothbrush/paste.

I always bring a 10mm wrench (Everything is metric nowadays) and a guitar pick. :)

I travel a lot for work, so I pack light. I wore the same clothes in as I wore out (Might sound gross, but I took a shower before I went in, then had them off about 3 hours later when I switched into the floral print smock) sweat pants and a large t-shirt (It was over 100 out when I was released...now? Probably a sweater). I'd bring a book, bible or kindle. Mainly for waiting for your surgery. Once you are out of surgery, you probably won't feel like doing much, plus they want you up/around. I have a bad back, and I actually slept in a chair/recliner the 2nd night. The nurses, purse practitioners, physician's assistants were all very willing to help. They fetched me heat packs, and gave me muscle relaxers in the IV when I told them my back pain was worse than the surgery. Honestly, now that I think about it, I wished I would have brought a cane...not for walking with the IV attached, but when walking out of the hospital into the car.

Things are happening the entire time you're there, they won't let you sit still for more than a few hours, between the IV machine beeping, the blood tests and blood thinner injections and so on.

Actually, I just thought of something I really wished I would have brought...a stack of starbucks gift cards. Saying "thank you" to the staff member helping you out is one thing, but talk is cheap; buying them a cup of coffee says you mean it.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
