You know- it’s kind of awful to repeatedly come here and encourage folks to go against the advice of their medical providers.

My medical provider is 100% on board with my diet. My medical provider is also a leading university teaching hospital. If your medical provider does not agree with my medical provider, there's nothing I can do about that.

We've known about the dangers of low carb diets for along time. Here's an American Harvard study of 120,000 people.

And that’s great! But the only thing you seem to come here to do is advocate on behalf of your beloved carbohydrates, as if the rest of don’t know any better and are doing this thing all wrong.

It just seems a bit antagonistic. 🤷🏻‍♀️

What I think is awful....is how people here are continually encouraged to do what doesn't work.

How many hundreds of posts have we read that go like this:

"I lost all this weight by self denial and will power and eating a very restricted diet....and I'm so sad and disgusted with myself that I put half of it back on. HELP!"

And what do these people routinely get told here?

Go back on your diet that was unsustainable...and didn't work. Try harder. Deny more.

It's crazy. And it's unhealthy to yo-yo.

There is no harm in illustrating a DIFFERENT path supported by science. No one is forcing anyone to do anything.

There are and always will be a variety of options and opinions.

Only if you're an authoritarian who feels that there are one set of rules that everyone must follow...and that anyone suggesting otherwise is a trouble maker.

I am an authoritarian, I guess. I think a person’s medical team is more knowledgeable about their success than I am. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Also- people who are freshly moved into their glass houses (meaning you’ve been at maintenance for like a second) really should not throw stones about how to successfully not regain or fail.

I think there are a lot of crappy "bariatric medical teams" out there that are offering really God awful advice that is potentially causing harm and endangering people.

My medical team thinks so, too.

So what do we do about that conundrum?

True, I've been at maintenance since July...not long at all. Touche. You're right.

And I'm also having a hell of a time keeping my weight up. I'd like to be 170...today the scale says 162.

I have been actively trying to stop my weight loss for three month. Most days I eat 1600 calories, but I try for 1700-1800. That's a LOT of food when you eat mostly fruits and veggies and complex carbs. I'm not a big 'fats' eater and I limit animal Proteins to 3 servings or so a week. I do get 60g of Protein a day....mostly from carbs/plant sources. I also get at least 25g of dietary Fiber a day. I avoid dairy. Am currently trying to eat more nuts.

While I want to weigh 170, my team says my body might have other ideas....and to trust my body. This is probably really good advice.

But yeah...part of my focus lately has been arresting my weight loss. My posts probably reflect that.

Believe it or not....there are others who are coping with this issue.

There are a lot of DIFFERENT experiences represented on this board:)

I think that, in the future, we will look back on our current anti-carb obsession with the same derision as we look back on the anti-fat nonsense of the 1990s. It's a fad. It will pass.

Nutrition science is in its infancy, and every single nutritionist I've ever met, and most I've followed online for any time, have been dogmatic. There are dogmatic vegetarian/vegan nutritionists, dogmatic anti-carb nutritionists (bariatric teams seem to hire them disproportionately often), dogmatic "three meals/no snacks" nutritionists, dogmatic "eat small amounts all day" nutritionists. More than one nutritionist I've had the misfortune to deal with has been entirely ignorant about the research surrounding BMR changes brought on by diet, probably because their paycheck required them to stay ignorant. They all (all of them I've met and nearly all of them whose websites I visit) cherry-pick their sources, ignoring the things they don't want to integrate into their practice.

Nutrition "science," as practiced in client-facing situations, is just survivorship bias writ large. "Well this all works for ME." MEH!

      Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

      Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
