I'm almost 9 months out. I haven't been the best lately with food. I'm afraid my overrating might have caused some stretching. But I'm curious, do you think 2 eggs and a piece of toast is a lot for one meal? Are you able to eat that in one sitting 9 months out?

I was told through my plan that by 9mos out, my intake should be almost 1000kcal daily. So, two eggs and toast don't sound like a big meal by those standards.

Additionally you cannot stretch your pouch. Your pouch can get accustomed to eating more by you grazing and overeating. But it will not physically stretch. If you feel like you are overeating you cal always do a pouch reset, which is basically going back to basics with your pre-op diet, then having nothing to eat on your "surgery" day and following your post op diet the next few days.

Thank you... Things are so confusing. I actually asked my surgeon if it was possible to stretch it back out and he said yes that overrating can actually do it. But I hear so many different things I don't know what to believe. I think I will try the reset..I was doing well for months after surgery but now I need to get back on track. Thank you again!

Congrats on nine months out!

Not sure what over eating is to you. You would seriously have to pack in food over and over to stretch your sleeve. If you are binge eating, you might want to look into a seeing counselor.

If you think you have stretched it. call your Surgeon office. They will be able to diagnose it. (I have compassion for people that have stretched their surgery. Just know It's rare)

Its common to consume more food as you progress out from sleeve surgery. Your stomach is not back to the original size but it is noticeable that you can hold more food. It has not stretched. This is where having the sleeve gets tricky. With the extra room in your sleeve it's easy to get in extra calories and gain weight.

Strategies for the extra room in your stomach

  • Keep calories and macros in range. (log if you don't know how much you are eating)
  • Add lots of veggies with your Protein to fill the extra space to keep hunger down and calories low
  • keep healthy salty sweet options for food cravings
  • Watch carbs and sugar. Calories and cravings can catch up to you.
  • Dense protein will fill you up better than soft stage foods.
  • Catch yourself when you graze. Like said above . Grazing can be a combination of healthy and unhealthy foods in many small meals that total over your calories. It's as if you never had surgery.

Love it!! Thank you! So helpful.

My overrating is continuing to eat when I'm already full and eating/snacking when I'm not truly hungry.. And it's mainly junk. I feel like I'm doing exactly what got me to be over weight to begin with.

So you already KNOW the answer to your "kinda question" and it's not really about the breakfast...which is fine from a 9months out perspective (at least my 9mo perspective). 2 large eggs is roughly 100g by weight +/- a few grams. 1 piece of toast is roughly 28g=1oz by weight usually. So that is about 128g/28.35=4.5oz by weight of food. I routinely eat about 6-8oz of food by weight per meal. I try very very hard to only eat 2-3 meals per day and to not snack. Most days I win, some days I lose and lose big. LOL.

I'm about 9 months out too (Feb 20 RNY). But knowing my volume is so large, I'm super careful to track and log my food and to also plan it out and have set calorie/macros that I target on any given day-- keeping carbs judicious and low. I eat 3-4oz of dense Protein first, and try for about 3oz of veg split between cooked veg and raw salad stuff. I do eat lower fat since I still have plenty of residual fat on my ass to supplement my lean protein and veg. LOL.

Congrats on 9 months and on continuing to seek your answers to life-long weight loss!!! Keep going!!!

I say this repeatedly. Sometimes its not motivation it's having perspective. A person in hospice with three months to live would gladly trade places for our weight loss struggles. Getting back on plan can be done. Once you start eating carbs, sugar and extra calories you crave them more. Will it be fun to detox off the junk and extra calories, No.

Behavior change is the sum of small efforts day in and day out. What you do in 24 hours will make a difference. Go back to basics. Log food, Hit your calories and macros, Hydrate, get in more activity. Nine months out I was at 1000 to 1100 calories. Check your plan.

This is not the easy way out. This is the work all of us put in.

Thank you for the info... Honestly I never thought to put how much I'm eating into ounces! (Other than protein) It's a great idea. I don't post much on the site but I'm always reading. I love this group!

Until just recently when I started actively feeling "full cues" with a meal, knowing how much was "safe" for me to eat, and how much I "was allowed" to eat without stress and still lose, were the only things that kept me from continual stress and repeatedly questioning everything I ate and the amounts! LOL. This way, I know if my plate is only 5-6oz of whole foods, and I satisfy my Protein and hydration amounts, I can eat the meal, finish it with a clean plate, and go about my merry way until the next meal. When it gets up to 7oz, it's dependent on what it is--salads? No prob...dense beef or one pot meals? Big trouble...

If your surgeon says it's possible it's because they have seen it.

Are you tracking or stay within limits? Start there to see where you are vs where you should be

Safe Journey!

I don't think that that sounds like that large of a meal, not for where you are in the program.

It is definitely very possible to stretch the stomach back out, why wouldn't it be? While the bulk of the stomach is removed, the remainder is still flexible and expands, but It would take continuous meals that are too large to do it, though. Just focus on your Water and Protein, filling in the rest with nutrient rich food and you should really be fine.

I've spoken with my surgeon at great lengths regarding this, as well as doing a lot of research. This is a big concern of mine... after all, none of us got to where we are from being delicate eaters (probably) :)

I’m 10 months out and just finished dinner, which was 2 eggs, a slice of American cheese, 3 small sausage links and 1 piece of toast. I was right on the edge of painfully full. This minus the toast is a meal I have eaten at least once a day since July.

Sounds like you are right on track. Keep track of calories and whatever else your nutritionist wants and try to stay within their limits. I’m in the maintenance phase and average around 2k calories a day. If you eat too much you will KNOW. I dry heaved for 30 minutes last night because I ate one strawberry to many.

I'm not sure what your maintaining instructions are.

My dietician had me add low glycemic carbs to slow/stop my weight loss. I eat several small meals through the day to hit my calorie and macro goals.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
