Insurance hoops.....

Recommended Posts

Surgery is scheduled for 10/29. I call my insurance daily. I'm thankful bariatric surgery is in my plan. The requirements are still daunting. What requirements did people find helpful and/or unnecessary?

The Psy eval is pretty critical, post surgery is a very crazy maelstrom of emotions and changes, being ready for it is pretty important. I don't think any of the pre-op testing was unnecessary. My pre-op processing including the required classes covered pretty much everything I needed to know. I do see however that some folks don't get as much attention pre-op, and I feel that more classes and information would be better for those groups.

I found everything necessary for the pre-op portion, I took nutrition classes, psych eval, and the pre-op class. I can't tell you how many times I've referred to the paperwork given to my in my pre-op class because most of the time, the questions I had were right in front of me.

No one can fully prepare you for the life change you are about to embark on, but having as much information as possible a head of time is priceless. I had all my paperwork saved in a 3-ring binder with notes, stickies and what not reminding me of things that could come up.

My post-op appointments have been great as well, I walk in with a list of questions and if they don't address something on my list I go right through them with me.

The more well versed you are the better prepared you are, but until the surgery happens, you still have no idea what you're in for. I am so thankful for the prep I received prior to surgery and the research I did on my own. I think my mindset and knowledge helped me stay focused and not go through some of the emotional roller coasters that others faced post surgery.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
