Swallow test before leaving hospital?

Recommended Posts

Did anyone have to do this after bypass - my nutritionist mentioned it casually yesterday but it sounds awful - and strange for someone with a brand new egg-stomach to swallow "as much and as quickly as I can" What were your experiences? did you have one?

Yes. But the swallow test was like one swallow. They do it to make sure you don’t have a leak. You can do it!!

Oh whew! I was worried - but I think I can do that! Thank you!

I was never required to have a swallow test. Maybe it's because I'm allergic to contrast media with iodine. Then again, it was never even mentioned as a post-surgical requirement. I probably had one of the most hands-off bypasses ever.

I'm sorry , Missouri-Lee's Summit, I just got a mental image of them doing it with long handled salad bowl tools. Okay toss that liver to the side, and pour some dressing in!

I've had a barium swallow test before, which is how I know about my allergy. It wasn't that bad. You have to drink something chalky and then they watch the liquid (via technology that I can't recall the name for) run its course in your body. No salad tongs involved.:)

You are my hero, Frustr8! You, go, big sister! (big as in older, not big as in big).

I had to do it, i really thought they was going to make me drink a lot. But literally they had two cups on the table not a lot in either. I think i took 4 sips in total only because of the extra small sips I was taking lol. It was all of 5 minutes. Not bad at all

Ugh that contrast is THE nastiest tasting stuff! But you will survive.

I had a swallow test after gastric bypass. I’m glad they did one to ensure no issues before leaving the hospital.

It is only one shot glass size dose of nastiness. It is over before you know it.

I did for my lap band, and because they withheld fluids for 24 hours, I actually asked for more - that's how parched I was. I don't like doing them because of the radiation involved, but I did get nuked pre-surgery to see how my lap band was working.

For the bypass revision, the doc was fine knowing that I could drink regular things and not throw up.

If there is a cool thing about the barium swallow is...how do I say this...your body cannot digest it at all...so it goes in white...and comes out white :)

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
