I guess I’m regretting a little...

Chill peeps.....this is a long term, different journey than ever before. It is not magic, not TV, not Slim Fast.....

There are just so many factors here, age, genetics, physical abilities, starting weight, what you lost prior to surgery, pre-op diet, hydration, Protein intake, yada yada yada.....

Your hormones are out of whack, you are recovering, your body is in shock, your mind is hyper-vigilant. STOP. Go find something to do, take a damn nap! Get a hobby, weight loss is not your hobby.....or your life...

There WILL be stalls, and it will suck. But 'we' promise, it all works out as long as you follow the golden rules:

Hydration, hydration, hydration. No drinking with solid food meals. Get required protein in first, then veg Walk daily 15 min minimum. Vitamins. This is all you do for the first 6 months.

I'm 15 days post-op I've lost 10lbs since surgery date. I'm not complaining at all, would I have liked to be one of those statistics that lost 20+ in the first week, sure. But, first off, the weight did not magically appear overnight, and while I'd love to think the surgery would make it all (OK 1/2) disappear overnight, it will not. I've read, reread the advice of many on these forums and they all say same / similar things. It's a marathon not a race and there will be stalls and you will get past them as long as you follow the plan.

The decision to do this is life long, it's irreversible and you have to be committed to living a healthy lifestyle. I've read failures and most are because they chose not to follow their plan early on. Be patient. From one newbie to another, we are all here for the same thing, weight loss to a healthy new life. Trust your body and trust the plan you agreed to before entering this lifetime commitment. And listen to the experts who have been here and done this.

Thank you all for the reality check. I know and have read about the stalls. But I know we have each other so we can vent too. And that’s what I’m doing. I just need to snap out of it and know 14 pounds is a lot! Patience is something I need to work on

Thank you for all the responses, my doctor clearly spelled out the expectations. I am not sure if I was clear or not when I posted but I don't expect this to be magic, my 20 lbs loss I attribute to being dehydrated as well. There is no pink elephant in my room. I just wanted to let another newbie know that they are not alone and I am feeling the same way.

Give it some time. I was where you were. Just expect the first month to be hard, and look forward to month two. I promise it will get better. I'm only 3.5 months out and 55 lbs. down. It's an amazing feeling!

Reality is you are not going to lose a pound of weight a day for very long.

Many times the regret comes from the realization that you are physically incapable of using food to cope with emotions now if you were an emotional eater. This is normal, it’s almost a grieving process and it will pass.

I believe though, one thing you can expect is you will be more successful at losing weight than you ever have before. Six months from now you won’t believe your eyes I bet.

Set realistic expectations and deal with the emotional stuff along the way and you will be fine.

You did not gain all your weight in a short period of time. It takes time for your body to adjust to the smaller amount of food that it is getting. I don't understand people being discouraged at 2 weeks out of not losing more then 14lbs. It will come. Stay off the scale. Are you sleeping at least 8 hours? Are you moving your bowels regularly? Are you drinking enough Water? All these things matter in weight loss but the most thing that matters is your patience. It will happen. Stay off the scale.

Our bodies like to stay fat... but the surgery will work. Give it time. I got frustrated at 2.5 weeks with my first stall, then dropped another 10, now i'm on my second stall at 5 weeks. I think my body is just adjusting. Overall, I'm still losing several pounds per week, it just doesn't happen in a straight line, and that is OK.

Your body will kick into gear again!

I’m also 2 weeks out today—had rny on 8/21! I’m down 18 lbs post op 28 lbs total. I’m slowly noticing changes. But when I pass the bakery in the grocery store with fresh pastries and there’s a Cinnabon I’m wanting. And Arby’s has the best potato cakes. But I know that’s hunger brain and not my body actually asking for food. That’s the mental part of this. I’m trying to focus on the positive but it’s hard.

I'm 2 days away from my 2 week post op. I will say it's been a whirlwind of emotions since. But I am determined to push through the feelings. If you let the negative thoughts control you, I can see how you are feeling this way. My first week I lost 12 pounds. I, too, felt discouraged. Cooking every night for my family. the smells, not being to taste or eat with them. Going to the grocery store and not being able to have the foods you enjoy or taking your boys through fast food and not ordering what your use too. Or NOT going to social events this early because of the what it does mentally when there is tons of food. Our routine as of now is different. Not having the comfort foods or whatever you did before, can be mentally challenging. Of course your gonna feel regret, but stop and remember why you did it in the first place. To break the patterns. To gain your confidence back. Not hide behind things. You wanted it bad enough to do the surgery, You HAVE to want it enough to continue the fight. We're all in it now and we are all here for the same reasons. Chin up! go out and do something today to get your mind off the energy your projecting. everyday is different and before we know it..... we will be over the hump.

My suggestion to you is find a different route to go. My house is exactly 5 minutes from every fast food restaurant that exist. All on one road. I started going a different way home so there would be no temptation. Just some thoughts

I have a weird suggestion for the Cinnabon craving. I bought a Cinnabon flavored Creamer and add a teaspoon or 2 to my vanilla Protein Shakes. Yum!

Been there, done that! The first month is tough and can be discouraging. Give it some time. Your body has been put through the wringer and needs time.

You’ve also lost a lb a day! Holy moly!

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

      Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

      Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
