I’m a teacher that is supposed to start September 4th. I just had surgery on the 23rd. I’m torn whether I should take a couple extra weeks off or suck it up and go in. I know it’s only day 3 but I feel like garbage and it’s hard to keep anything down.

When did everyone go back to work?

Everyone is different.

I'm less than 36 hours out of surgery. Been home for six hours and had a 20 minute walk. Feel like I could eat a whole meal, but I know that's not possible.

When I had my band back in 2009, I was wiped out for a week. Go figure...

We all are all different. I went back rather quickly (3 days), but my job isn't teaching :).

I was back with kids twelve days later (teacher too). Looks like you're on that type of timeframe. It was hard, but I managed.

Thanks all! I know it’s entirely personal how I will feel by then. But I dread missing the first days of school and having to jump back in when they’ve been working with a sub.

I know I’ll need to take a day off for a follow up appointment but that’s unavoidable sometimes

I took almost two weeks off, a week part time, and back to four days a week this next week. I’ve already learned I literally am exhausted at the end of the day, ok maybe by the afternoon 😂 I also need to drink more and move slower. I thought I’d kill it and be working out by now 🤣 but am learning this is a process and trying to just roll with it.

I had surgery on Thursday and returned to work on Monday. It was very tiring but I made it. (I have a desk job.)

I think it in part depends what age level you work with. I’m a teacher too - middle and high school social studies. When I’ve subbed as elementary I feel like it can be more moving around/bending/performing and you never know when an overeager hug will hit you right in the incisions...I think I would have been fine two weeks out, just really exhausted/low energy in the afternoon.

I think it’d be really hard to miss the first few days of school, and I’d say be there for the first few days even if you need to take the Thursday Friday off that week to rest up after it. But as others have said everyone’s timeline is different!!

Good luck!!!

You should be fine given no complications. I went back to work day 3. I ended up taking an additional day off late in the week from pure exhaustion but have been okay since.

When did everyone go back to work?

My doctor suggested two-weeks but when I told him my job was at a desk and I had the flexibility to walk, stretch use a stand-up desk he OK'd a return at 1 week.

One of my colleagues is a corporate instructor and she took two-weeks, but wished for three. Said standing was difficult all day.

My suggestion is to listen to your body. Only you know how your body will react to long standing / sitting, etc. at your work setting. Like you at day three I was probably feeling much like you and thinking that returning at the one week mark seemed foolish, but I can tell you from my own experience that each day got a little easier and I felt a little more together and stronger.

Today is my first day back, I won't work a 10-hour day like my I did prior to, but I will work a normal workday and (2.5 hrs to go).

Good luck with your decision and remember we are all here to help and support you

kuddos to all of you... I had surgery 4 days ago. my energy level is no where near being able to return to work. I'm a hairdresser with a flexible schedule and plan on returning Sept 4 with shorter days. i know my energy struggles with the fact I can't get my fluids in. I'm doing 4 oz fluids every 2 hours and I feel like i'm starving. such a struggle.

I did short term disability. My followup with surgeon is after labor day. Then I get to go on pureed diet. Figure 2 weeks after that at the one month follow up is when they'll release me for work. Going to be rough though as we have a major event scheduled end of September which I'll have to work in addition to regular schedule so I'm taking this time off to heal

2 weeks for me. The anesthesia alone makes me exhausted. My first day back today and I’m good enough to last the whole day. But each person is different.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
