So, I'm getting near my surgery. I don't have the exact date but it is in October.

I have 2 fears:

1. Vomiting after surgery like I have the stomach flu.....I've had several surgeries in the past and I get REALLY sick after. I've been known to vomit for 8 or more hours after surgery. I've talked to my surgeon about this and he says there are some really good medications for nausea. I guess my biggest fear is bursting out the staple line.

2. Going through this life changing/saving surgery and NOT losing weight. I've been able to lose weight in the past but at about the 2 or 3 month mark it just stops......

Any and all comments are appreciated.

They have a patch they put on me for nausea and I received other iv meds as well. I too get very sick after surgeries. I was fine. As far as not losing weight, it’s a commitment and I hear from successful sleevers that as long as you stick with the program it works. Plenty of success stories on these boards.

I threw up a lot after my WLS. It was three days of vomiting bile. I threw up the entire ride home from the hospital. I do not respond well to anathesia. I was terrified but it was OK. No burst staple line.

You will totally lose weight! It’s impossible not to! I was so scared of my surgery and if I had known then what I know now, I think I would have been more excited! I have had my own issues and complications but WLS is an amazing tool! This is an amazing opportunity! Make the most of it!

I told my doctors that I do throw up after anesthesia; therefore, they are going to give me something to help with the nausea and to help prevent me from throwing up. Also, the only way you are going to not gain the weight is if you truly do a lifestyle change. I do have a food addiction. Therefore, I have to make sure not to incorporate any processed or refined sugars into my diet. Once I start again, I know I will be hooked. I am going to have to try and gain my gym addiction again. It sucked at the time, but it was better than being fat! Good luck!

Ask for scopolamine patch for nausea, they put it on before you go down to surgery. Works amazingly well.

I have these same fears and am also hoping to have surgery in October or November.

I honestly am also just plain scared of having surgery (never had it)

But so many people have done amazing!

I know you will too!

And so will you @ dreaming of a sleeve! I believe yours fears are fears of the unknown, not,of the surgery itself. And that is normal, you can hear all of us until you think your head will pop, but since you are an individual yours still might differ. But it will be good, good for you, and a -👣step on the pathway to good health. I have met only one person not planning for hers, she,was the 1 in a million that had a rare abdominal occurance and ended up with a sleeve to save her life. She came here, scared, bewildered what happened and I'm glad we could give her enough. practical advice that I think she's going to be okay.
And if we were here for her, rest assured we are here for you too. Ask if something is bothering you, we usually have at least 1 answer. Sometimes many!

I honestly don't see how a person could NOT lose weight after having the sleeve. I guess if you don't follow directions and eat the wrong foods and eat all the time, you won't lose. If you are ready to feel great and be on a far healthier path, I can't recommend the sleeve enough. It's a great tool!

Good luck to you!

You're wonderful! Thank you for the kind words and encouragement! I love this community and it is so nice to get on here and talk to everyone! I love seeing the success and positivity! Its amazing!

Your right i have lots of fears of the unknown, and the "what if", but i know this is what i want! I want to be healthy and happy! Comfortable in my own skin again! I tend to dwell on the side effects and the bad. But i really need to remember why i am doing this. I would much rather be doing this now that having heart surgery 20 years down the road. hopefully this will give me the kickstart i need :)

I had the same fears. My surgery was 3 days ago. They gave me 3 different meds for nausea. I don’t do well on some pain pills so when they unhooked the morphine the following morning I didn’t ask for pain pills. To be honest the 3 xtra strength Tylenol was sufficient. I did get low fever and felt weak so I stayed a second night.
Just make sure you walk every 2 hours to help with the gas pains (the worst of the whole thing) and take the other pills
I feel almost normal today

One week post gastric sleeve and I have had no vomiting. My last major surgery was a c-section and I vomited like crazy after that. I think it was the morphine they gave me. Told the anesthesiologist about this and he used fentanyl instead. I was also on Zofran in the hospital. Just discuss your concerns with the anesthesiologist. They have lots of options to take god care of you.

I received this patch for my surgery. Wasn't expecting it as I don't have issues. But I'll say it worked great. The only down side, it messed with my near vision. I felt like an old lady having to increase the font size on my phone to see / read anything. And it was a good day and half after removing it that my vision finally corrected. But nausea I did not have.

Yes-I had the same problem with vision. Apparently it’s a side effect if you get it on your fingers.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
