How to make cottage cheese and plain yogurt interesting?

Recommended Posts

So my clinic has me on a 1000 cal per day, fairly restrictive liquid diet for two weeks before my surgery. I’m currently on day three and I’m doing okay but feeling nervous about my ability to do this for two full weeks.

One thing I’ve found that I really enjoy is cottage cheese with pineapple (Kemp’s fruit on the bottom). It’s technically slightly above the sugar per serving I’m supposed to have (10g instead of 7g), and it’s expensive to buy because it’s just single serve. I also feel like I have TONS of sweet options (sugar free popsicles, pudding, etc) but I’m looking for more savory options. Though I’m interested in hearing what you do for sweet or savory with both cottage cheese and plain yogurt!

What kind of seasonings, liquids, etc do you add to your cottage cheese to make it more interesting/satisfying?

Thanks!!

You can add ALL SORTS of stuff to cottage cheese and plain yogurt (greek works better for savory IMO) It's pretty easy really, just find a seasoning or mix or marinade mix that you enjoy, and mix a bit into the cottage cheese or yogurt. It's going to take some experimentation to get a flavor that you are happy with, but it's legit just as easy as mixing in some premixed powders. And you can add some unflavored Protein as well to boost your protein intake.

My pre-op was SF Jello, watermelon, Protein Shakes and celery (I could eat as much of this as I wanted)... celery was my go to, since I could eat as much as I needed but it got old very quickly. So I started coating up pre-cut celery with seasonings like "Pub Burger" seasoning or "Maple Bacon" seasoning. And boy did that make things easier to deal with! So, go crazy, find yourself some seasonings you are interested in and start mixing them into your approved foods and just go wild! You never have to sacrifice flavor during this whole process, you just need to play around a bit.

For something simple, sweet and easy to add in, my surgeon and nutritionist recommended adding sugar free Torani syrups to cottage cheese or yogurt.

I'll second the recommendation on syrups. Also, Water enhancers like the Hawaiian Punch flavoring work great in yogurt.

For cottage cheese, cinnamon and stevia work well. For savory, I'd suggest garlic salt.

After surgery when you are back to regular foods add with it turkey bacon , smoked salmon, chili , huevos rancheros

It can be a whole meal with just a tiny bit of the other stuff added on

Matt hit the nail... seasoning mixes. I like taco or chili mix (check the sugar content). For dessert I put a spoonful or SF pudding mix into it... try the cheesecake flavor! YUM

Where do you buy the syrups?

They sell Torani syrups at Wal-Mart's grocery side, a lot of people said they have put them in smoothies etc.

I love cottage cheese with halved cherry tomatoes as a sort of savory option.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
