I said "Lets keep this as civil as possible" and "Nothing negative"... neither of which can be applied to my statement about moving the cheat meal to another part of the day to avoid consuming those calories so close to bedtime. There are plenty of studies into cheating (potentially) being beneficial. I passed no judgement. If someone is going to cheat, that's on them, however helping someone who's already cheating to "cheat better" isn't anything bad at all. I mean, if someone could give you a simple tip to change your cheating into something that might actually benefit you... wouldn't you want to know what that change was? I know I would.

I'm not cheating, I'm in defiance- I'm starving by bedtime. Add sleepy and drowsy and I grab the bad stuff. Trust me, I know I self sabotage. What you said was right, I'm at 600 cals at bedtime and then packing another 200 in just a few bites with Peanut Butter. It's not the end of the world, yet but I was told to stay under 800 for the first 6 months. It's hard to lay in bed hungry.

@sillykitty. I talked to my youngest doctor son and he pretty much, but nicely, let me know that I didn't actually have a good grasp on the TOTAL Protein test. His explanation was way over my head. All I remember him saying was something about children in poor countries who are protein-starved... I think, :( I'm still not sure.

That said, I stand corrected. I'm the first to admit when I've mispresented a medical fact.

Another confession!!!

Aaahhhhh, Matt! I’m embarrassed. Your small cheats make mine look like epic fails of character! Hahahaha

Let’s start with the 2/3 box of Cheez-Its yesterday afternoon. I had planned to have a small afternoon snack of 14 small calories, 75 calories. Not so fast, Blondie! How did 2/3 of a box simply disappear into thin air? I had anticipated that my constriction would stop me, but not with slider foods like crackers and chips. Alas, no more sliders for this gal.

On the pre-op diet, I would gag on Protein Shakes so I simply went full Protein with no carbs. Yes, this was cheating according to my doctor, but I still lost weight and my liver was perfect for surgery.

There have been numerous cheats along the way. After surgery, I felt nauseous for quite sometime. The culprit was Wellbutrin. After going off Wellbutrin, the nausea has disappeared. Due to the nausea, I advanced to real food sooner than the suggested diet after surgery. Granted, it was mostly Wendy’s chili, but that would be technically cheating.

Carbonated beverages are another cheat. I never drink any carbonated beverages with calories, however. I love diet, caffeine-free Mountain Dew. In fact, it was one of the few fluids I could stomach initially, drinking it flat for the first 6 weeks.

Given all the above admissions, I am happy with my slow but sure progress. I’m working hard to get my 60 grams of protein, 64 ounces of fluids, follow the 30/30 rule and making good choices.

I drank more than I should have starting around one year post op, and ended up with transfer addiction to alcohol. (I very rarely drank pre op).

Tried to quit drinking, and could see the addiction reverting back to food, I regained 15 lb from my lowest weight in a couple of months.

I tried counseling, was put on a lot of medications that made me feel like a actual crazy person, so ended up quitting them all, now I am trying to cut back on drinking with a goal of quitting on my own.

My experience with alcohol now is much like my old experience with food before surgery. I sometimes wish I had never gotten WLS in the first place, but if I am able to quit drinking it will hopefully be a small bump in the road to an overall healthier life post wls.

I have a confession to make and it is not of dietary variety. I am posting on the hopes of making someone in BariatricLand feel less alone. If it is TMI I apologize but here it goes. Among my problems that my future RnY surgery will either abolish or lessen is lymphedema in my lower legs, not a fun condition to have. I am supposed to be taking Lasix which is a strong enough strength I have to supplement with K Clor so that I don't deplete my body's Potassium, levels . Do I like doing it? Not especially. I am currently drinking 84-120 oz of varied fluids daily, one because,i'm in training for surgery and two because I have 3 healthy functioning kidneys so can clear that much.. Plus I don't get so hungry when I'm full of Water. So why would I want a medication that only makes me void more? So I confess I haven't been super compliant. Well I did see my surgeon Dr Needleman on Tuesday, anybody who follows me knows that, well in the chit chat he asked if I had any circulatory problems, I am a truthful little elk even if it makes me look dumb, so I told him about the lymphedema and faulty drainage from my legs." Hmmn" he says" one leg more than the other?" Left one I said , pulled off my shoe and sock, then he says " You are taking your Lasix faithfully, aren't you?" Oops I'm caught in the cross-hairs now, I m8ght have temporarily fooled PCP but I'm not going to fool THIS dude. So I said yes and I have been good every since To save on b b 73rd linen and the carpeting I have put myself in adult pull-ups at night. See I am also To be complient with my c pap until my surgery, I sleep more soundly and nature calls and I make my way to the pretty porcelain plumbing I can make it there with less embarrassment. Doesn't it figure, my bedroom is at the front of the house, that other room at the rear so I have to go through living room, dining room and kitchen to get there. And if I should have to dribble in the kitchen that's a fall risk. So pride has had to take a backseat for awhile. I figure as I get thinner i.Will move faster and get there in time again. So folks if you're walking with me in this,it will be better soon and it's okay anyway. Your friend Frustr8 .aka. Princess Tinkle-pants👖

I didn’t have a pre op diet, only the day before was all Clear Liquids. I don’t know how folks did this for 2 weeks! I was light headed from one day of it.

Flash to post op.... I never puréed anything. I did have yogurt, mashed potatoes, and Soups, things that were naturally smooth. But mentally I couldn’t do the meats in smoothie form. I just chewed A LOT.

Some other cheats- I went to McDonalds about 3 weeks post op. I figured the food (fries) was squishy enough and I could chew it down. The first few bites were heaven. Then about 15 minutes later I got incredibly sick. That was the last of that.

Also, when I progressed to soft foods, I tried chicken wings- a pre op favorite. I ate about 1.5 wings before I was sick to my stomach. It tasted so good going down.... not as much coming back up.

I found a low calorie, high Protein ice cream I eat fairly often. I’ve never felt sick from it and it’s been refreshing on these hot summer days.

So... definitely not perfect. I hit a stall my 3rd week but once I incorporated more exercise the weight started falling off again. Trying to stick to Proteins and cooked vegetables now and I’ve been pretty good.

@GeminiSky so it’s not technically high in Protein, it does have 6g, but the brand is Chilly Cow.

I did read a lot of the Halo top ice creams have a good amount of protein.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
